Merchants, Markets & Shops Index: This category includes original works of art depicting markets and the merchant trades dating back to the sixteenth century. Today almost everyone goes to the supermarket or the grocery store, rarely meeting the people who produce the food they buy. In the past, markets and speciality shops were the center of every town. Most of the products sold were home grown and available only within the season. Depending on the culture and economical needs of each location, products offered varied. There were vegetable and fruit markets, curiosity shops, flower markets, fish markets, ceramic shops, butcher shops and others. Even if many people don't take advantage of their local markets today, it is good to know that many towns and cities still carry on the old tradition. Naming a few of the places depicted in the works listed here, there is the Cincinnati Market Place, the Paris flower market, the Quincy Market, the life stock markets in Texas. If you do a bit checking, and if you live in a smaller town, you can sill find a local vegetable and fruit market open on Saturday mornings.
