Activities associated with sports, games, the circus, carnivals, celebrations, have always played a major role for artists and collectors alike. A few of the painters, illustrators, watercolour artists and or original printmakers from the sixteenth century to the late twentieth century dealing with these subjects must be mentioned here.
Sports & Games: This category contains a selection of original art concentrating upon depictions associated with sporting activities such as baseball, polo, golf, football, fishing, boxing, gambling, card games, chess and various other types of games or sporting events. Adults and children have always taken great pleasure in these types of recreational pursuits and they in turn, have played a traditional role in our lives during the past, present and surely our future generations. Case in point are some of the works of art listed in this collection. In 1795 Caroline Watson created an engraving for John Boydell's 'Shakespeare' series where she portrays Ferdinand and Miranda playing chess. During the mid 1840's, the French satirical artist, Cham 'Charles-Henri-Amedee', created a series of lithographs under the general title of 'Actualies'. The pastimes of the middle and upper classes, such as horse racing and hunting, were a primary focus. Next, The motion and movement of the sport of polo intrigued Sybilla Mittell Weber throughout the 1930's; as a result, she created a series of beautiful drypoint engravings that captured the grace and beauty of the sport to perfection. In 1974, Marcia Marcus was commissioned to create one of the greatest original lithographic posters for the upcoming Olympic games. And let's not leave out one of America's favourite sports 'Baseball', in the 19th century, Stimson's Sudsena Washing Powder produced a trade card depicting a young boy at bat and almost a century later, still carrying out this tradition is Seymour Leichman's with his lithograph depicting the game in action. The Circus, Fairs, Carnivals & other Celebrations: This category contains a selection of original art concentrating upon depictions dealing with the circus, as well as, other festivities, such as, fairs, carnivals and political, military or religious celebrations. George Kenneth Hartwell, Leon Marie Constant Dansaert, Raymond Creekmore and Georges Schreiber contributed original paintings, watercolors, lithographs, and etchings dealing with the worlds of the circus and carnivals. Their renditions of circus imagery depicting clowns, animal trainers, acrobats, jugglers and other forms of circus entertainment are highly regarded and included in museums, corporate and private collections. Another example is 'The Montreal Winter Carnival'. It became a hugely successful event. The Montreal Star and competing publishers thus hired Canada's greatest artists to commemorate the activities. One need only mention that three of the major artists covering the Carnival at the time were Henri Julien, William Raphael and Robert Harris. Their original lithographs in this field stand as an important historical and artistic document of nineteenth century Canada. The Circus Portrayed in Art Index
