Art of The Print: Religion Portrayed in Art Index: This page contains a listing of original works of art containing a selection of artworks depicting human activities associated with religion, such as, studies or portraits of saints, clergymen & theologians, scenes dealing with a spiritual theme as well as views of cathedrals, churches, chapels, monasteries, mosques & synagogues as well as other religious structures.
Our Gallery, Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com offers a wide selection of international fine art. We sell original paintings, watercolors, drawings, monotypes, engravings, etchings, lithographs and other mediums of original graphic art. These works of art date from the Renaissance period to the contemporary art period. We guarantee the authenticity of every work of art 100%. Full documentation and certification is provided.
This page is further divided into categories dealing with Christianity, Judaica, Eastern Religions and Places of Religious Worship. Several pieces of art listed below are not strictly 'religious'. Our modern celebration of Christmas, for example, contains aspects not directly related to the Christian faith. Arbit Blatas's moving work of art, "Babi Yar", depicts one of the most barbarous Nazi war crimes of World War Two. It is included because of its importance to the Jewish Faith and as a constant reminder of the atrocities one civilization can inflict upon another.
Mythological subjects are not included. Robert Graves writes, "Mythology is the study of whatever religious or heroic legends are so foreign to a student's experience that he cannot believe them to be true. Hence the English adjective 'mythical', meaning 'incredible'; and hence the omission from standard European mythologies, such as this, of all Biblical narratives even when closely paralleled by myths from Persia, Babylonia, Egypt and Greece; and of all hagiological legends." Robert Graves, New Larousse Encyclopedia of Mythology, Hamlyn Publishing Group, London, 1973, p. V.
Some of the most recent works of art included on this page are by the international painters, illustrators, watercolour artists and original printmakers, are the 17th century British engraver, William Faithorne, the late eighteenth century stipple engraver, John Ogborne based upon a design by Richard Westall, the later eighteenth century Italian engraver, Antonio Capellani, the French twentieth century painter Andre Krafft, the early nineteenth century architectural engraver, George Hollis based upon a design by the architect, painter, designer and publisher, John Chessel Buckler, One of Hungary's most esteemed painters and etchers of the early twentieth century, Vilmos Aba-Novak, the French artist, Pierre Bonnard, the prominent Massachusetts illustrator, printmaker, sculptor and designer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Theodore Brown Hapgood, the British satirical artist, William Hogarth, the contemporary French painter and lithographer, Urbain Huchet, one of England's most famous stipple engravers, Luigi Schiavonetti, the early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, Frederick Christian Lewis 'F.
