Art of The Print: Posters and Advertising Art Artist Index: This page contains a listing of original lithographic posters & advertising art created by international painters, illustrators, watercolour artists and or original printmakers from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. Our Gallery, Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com offers a wide selection of international fine art. We sell original paintings, watercolors, drawings, monotypes, engravings, etchings, lithographs and other mediums of original graphic art. These works of art date from the Renaissance period to the contemporary art period. We guarantee the authenticity of every work of art 100%. Full documentation and certification is provided.
This collection features a list of original lithographs by major French and American Art Nouveau artists. Also inluded are historical lithographs created purely for commercial advertising by the 19th century artists and of course, original art used for promotional or marketing purposes by contemporary printmakers. These works of art represent the epitome of complex printmaking techniques and artistry, which reflect the true tastes and desires of the times.
The Art Nouveau movement reached its highest form of artistic expression in Paris during the last decade of the nineteenth century. Expressing themselves primarily through the art of the large, lithographic poster such great masters as Toulouse-Lautrec, Eugene Grasset, Paul Berthon, Cheret, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Ripart, Misti and others created a revolutionary form of imagery dependent upon elements of form and design. In short, French Art Nouveau stands at the core of the beginnings of modern art.
The American Art Nouveau movement also reached its pinnacle during the mid 1890's. Publishers of both periodicals and books, such as "The Century Magazine" and the "Lothrop Publishing Company" extensively commissioned the talents of these artists. The rapid rise of American artists in the Art Nouveau field, such as Louis Rheade, William Schumacher, Frank Hazenplug, George Wharton Edwards, and a host of others, quickly gave the United States as great a grouping of Art Nouveau artists as any European nation.
Lithography became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards, labels and trade cards for advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Companies were quick to recognize the vast potential of creating colourful and eye-catching images to represent their product. They spared no expense competing against each other through their advertising art. It is no different, from the strategies used by marketing and promotional agencies that commission artists to create original images for magazines, newspapers, and companies needing their services.
We provide search links to different Categories ranging from old master engravings and original fine art to speciality collecting such as animals, botanicals, genre, maps, military art, posters and advertising, satirical art, sports and many other interests. You can also link to pages focused on the century you prefer or by the artists' nationalities.
The index is set up in alphabetical order by artist's last name. This index contains a complete listing of all the posters and advertising art included in this website with links to a full description of each item and images when available.
