Through the centuries portraiture and the printmaking arts
have formed a strong connection. At the highest level such master printmakers
as Durer, Rembrandt, Francisco Goya, James McNeill Whistler and Pablo Picasso created engraved, etched
or lithographic portraits and self-portraits that rank as world masterworks.
Such is the lasting power of the printed portrait that even in the more non-representational
schools of twentieth century art, such as cubism, fauvism and futurism, one
will find many examples of this discipline.
In the seventeenth century portrait engravers were as highly
esteemed as painters, and the most successful often led their lives alongside
royalty. This was particularly true in France where such engravers as Robert
Nanteul, Antoine Masson and Gerard
Edelinck enjoyed huge reputations. To
the north, in Antwerp, such fine engravers as Paulis
Pontius, Lucas
Vorsterman and Robert
van Voerst worked under the guidance of Anthony
van Dyck for the
creation of the brilliant set known as the Iconography.
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries many new forms
of printmaking were invented. The mezzotint
dominated 18th century portraiture, while the lithograph,
soft
ground and stipple engraving & the woodcut all produced fine
examples of portraiture in the nineteenth century. Twentieth century portraits
and self-portraits listed on this page include examples by such distinct
artists as Frederick
Carter, Ludwig
Mickalek , Anton Faistauer and Sidney
Chafetz. Important drawings, paintings and watercolors such as, Paul
Travis's 'Lumbwa Tribesman', Violeta Janes's portraits and Arieh Merzer's Portrat study, in these mediums are also included.
A few other artists included in this page are Nick Abdalla,
Jose Ignacio Aguirre, Irving Amen, Frank Milton Armington, (Frank Armington),
Johannes, Amalie Baader, Captain William Baillie, James Basire,
Leonhard Beck, Isaac Beckett, Paul Berthon, Julius Thiengen Bloch, Robert Blyth,
Pierre Bonnard, Harvey Breverman, Max Bruning, Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin,
(Charles de Saint-Memin), Enomoto Chikatoshi, Asher Brown Durand, Luciano Guarnieri,
Georg Daniel Heumann, Louis Lenain, Adelaide Webster-Donald, Margaret Sargent 'Margarett Sargent',
Bernard Alan Solomon 'Bernard Solomon', and Carl Wuermer. These artists have produced some of the
finest original graphic works of art in the field of portrait studies from the early
seventeenth century to the late twentieth century.
We provide search links to different Categories ranging from old master engravings and original fine art to speciality collecting such as animals, botanicals, genre, maps, military art, posters and advertising, satirical art, sports and many other interests.
