This category deals with the general theme of children. For centuries
artists have depicted children and their lives in a wide number of ways. Children
at play and at work and their relationships to others (particularly their mothers)
are major themes. In general, artists of former centuries sometimes mirrored
society's beliefs that children were only 'little adults'. Beginning in the
nineteenth century, however, artists began to examine the unique and invaluable
elements of childhood. Twentieth century portrayals are as diverse and wonderful
as the always active imagination of the child.
This collection contains original works of art by leading international painters, illustrators, watercolour artists and
original printmakers from the sixteenth century to the late twentieth century. A few of the
artists featured on this page are Irving Amen, Francesco Bartolozzi, Harry Cimino, Christian Friedrich Fritzsch, Marion Greenwood, Honore Guilbeau,
Lily Harmon, Sir Hubert Von Herkomer, Jules Mervin, Jean Baptiste Michel, James Kearns, Edward J. Portbury 'Edward Portbury', Andre Racz, Charlotte Ross, David Sharir,
Phyllis Sloane, Anker Smith, Lawrence Beal Smith, Frederick Christian Lewis, Bartolomeo Pinelli, (Bartolommeo Pinelli), Peltro William Tomkins, Arthur Turrell,
Thomas Waterman Wood, Mariana Yampolsky and many other masters of this subject.
Art by these artists is included in important corporate and private collections all over the
world. Many of their works are also in the permanent collections of most
major museums and universities, such as the National Museum of American Illustration,
Denver Art Museum, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Brandywine River
Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Newark Museum, Museum of New Mexico,
the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art,
Washington, The British Museum in London, Bibliotheque Ambrosienne and the National Gallery
of Canada, just to name a few.
We also provide search links to different categories ranging from old
master engravings and original fine art to speciality collecting such as animals,
botanicals, genre, maps, military art, posters and advertising, satirical art,
sports and many other interests. You can also link to pages focused on the century
you prefer or by the artists' nationalities.
