An outstanding British etcher and illustrator of animal subjects,
Leonard Robert Brightwell studied at the Lambeth School of Art, London. Countless
visits to the Zoological Gardens, however, provided his most important artistic
education. Brightwell became a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London in
1906 and a member of the Marine Biological Association in 1922. During the first
half of the twentieth century he was commissioned by these associations and
other museums to make scientific drawings of various forms of life, including
extinct animals.
From approximately 1920 to 1932 L. R. Brightwell created a number
of finely rendered etchings and engravings of animal life. All were published
in London by James Connell & Sons in signed editions ranging from fifty
to one hundred and fifty impressions. As one can see from this original engraving
they rank among the finest works of natural history art.
One of America's finest lithographic artists of the twentieth
century, Victoria Hutson Huntley studied at the Art Students League of New York
under such master printmakers as John Sloan, Max Weber and Kenneth Hayes Miller.
She first gained national recognition in 1930 for a series of lithographs depicting
industrial and factory sites, entitled, Steam and Steel. For this work she received
the annual award from the Art Institute of Chicago. In the following years,
Huntley received more important awards and grants from such institutions as
the Philadelphia Printmakers Club (1933), the Library of Congress, Washington,
(1945), the Association of American Artists (1946), the American Academy of
Arts and Letters (1947), the Guggenheim Fellowship (1948) and the Society of
American Graphic Artists (1950 & 1951).
A fine American equestrian artist, George Ford Morris was equally
talented as a painter, sculptor, illustrator and lithographer. He was mainly
self-taught but attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1888 and
later at the Academie Julien in Paris (1925). In the early twentieth century,
Morris worked mainly from his Thirty-Third Street studio in New York City.
Concentrating almost solely upon the art of the horse, George
Ford Morris was a frequent contributing artist to such publications as 'The
American Horseman', 'Breeder's Gazette', 'American Field',
'National Horseman' and 'Thoroughbred of California'. He also
illustrated for national publications such as 'Scribner's' and 'Century'
magazines'.
