American Art of the Depression Era dating from 1930 to 1945 (Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - Artist Index: R to Z): Like the previous three pages this page provides a full variety of Depression era themes and techniques. Stark realities of the times are provided by W. P. Robinson (Abandoned Farm) and Isadore Weiner (Gardening). In contrast are pieces like John W. Winkler’s playful landscape, Rae Lakes, California and the fine animal studies by Clarence Zuelch.
Two magnificent drypoints by Albert Sterner -- Meditation and The Promised Land –will also be found below. In particular, The Promised Land seems like a potent symbol of man’s journey through the decade of the Great Depression.
In total, there are over two hundred works of original art created by American artists from the Depression decade of the 1930’s and into the early 1940’s in this directory. The Art of the Print 'American Art of the Depression Era' directory also contains a selection of active art publishers, associations, groups, clubs, and societies located in major cities throughout the United States. These organizations provided an opportunity for American artists to work and create original art during the Great Depression.. They include the American Artists Group, the Associated American Artists, New York, the Buffalo Print Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Lone Star Printmakers, the Prairie Print Makers, the Print Club of Cleveland, the Print Club of Philadelphia, the Print Club of Rochester, the Society of American Etchers, the Indiana Society of Printmakers, the Society of Washington D.C. Artists and the Syracuse Print Club. A brief description of some of these is provided below.
American Artists Group: Founded in 1934, the American Artists Group of New York was one of the most interesting experiments of the Depression era. its aim was to produce original prints (the large majority being either lithographs or woodcuts) at prices that could be afforded during these difficult economic times. By 1938 this publisher had issued well over one hundred prints by such great artists as Emil Ganso, Alan Lewis, Warren Newcombe, Benton Spruance, Leo Meissner Rudolph Ruzicka, Julius Lankes and others. Most were published in unsigned, unlimited editions at the price of $2.75 each. Alas, this small price was still out of the reach of most and A.A.G. editions rarely exceeded three hundred impressions and many were printed in editions of less than one hundred. Rudolph Ruzicka's original wood engraving A Summer Day was published by the American Artists Group in 1936 and is illustrated below.
Associated American Artists (A.A.A.): One of the longest running and most successful American print publishers of any era even began its operations in this decade. The Associated American Artists of New York issued its first catalogue of etchings for sale in January of 1935, selling each print for the standard price of $5.00 each. Seen below on this page both Sunday Afternoon and Belmont Farm (c. 1945), by Samuel Thal are early examples of A.A.A. prints from this decade.
Buffalo Print Club: Established in 1931, the Buffalo Print Club was devoted to the study, creation and promotion of fine prints until its demise in 1962. From 1931 to 1962, the organization held most of its annual exhibitions at the Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY in order to promote the art of both its members and national printmakers. Its members included such artists, as Kevin B. O'Callahan (founder), James Koenig, Niels Yde Andersen, Lewis W. Rubenstein, William J. Schwanekamp, and others.
Cleveland Print Makers: Founded in 1932 by Kalman Kubinyi, the Cleveland Print Makers established the 'Print-a-Month' series, in which subscribers would receive an etching, lithograph or woodcut each month for a year. Artists received a $50. salary for each commission and every print was published in a limited, signed edition of 250 impressions. Contributing national artists included Adolph Dehn, Emil Ganso, Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Rockwell Kent. Among the leading Cleveland area artists were George Adomeit, Paul Travis, William Sommer, Frank Wilcox, Kalman Kubinyi, Elsa Vick Shaw, Teresa Schmotzer and Honore Guilbeau. This series was the first of its kind and successfully raised revenue for the artists as well as making original art affordable during the Great Depression years. The 'Print-a-month' series continued until 1937. Contributions to the Print-A-Month project listed here include, Elsa Vick Shaw's originall aquatint engraving, Coxcomb (1936), two original engravings by Teresa Schmotzer, For the Innocent (1934) and Strange Journey (c. 1935) , The Comet, an original drypoint engraving by Hugh Seaver (1934), and Bela Zaboly' drypoint engraving, Tree (1933).
Indiana Society of Printmakers: Founded in 1934, by Evelynne Mess, George Jo Mess, Frederick Polley and Louis Oscar Griffith, the Indiana Society of Printmakers is a prominent organization devoted to the promotion and creation of fine prints by Indiana printmakers. Their early members included Jacob Howard Euston, Chester Leich, Constance Forsyth, John Lehman, Herbert Waters, Charles Surendorf, and others. From the beginning, the Indiana Society of Printmakers held annual exhibitions to promote the art of its members. In 1952, they held the 'First Biennial Exhibition of 50 Indiana prints' at the John Heron Art Museum. It was a juried exhibition that included members of the Indiana Society of Printmakers and other leading Indiana artists. Evelynne and George Jo Mess also founded and taught at the Circle Art Academy (1927-1932).
The Colophon: Founded in 1929, The Colophon, A Book Collectors' Quarterly is well known to collectors of both original printmaking and the book arts. During the 1930's and 1940's it published quarterly issues pertaining to these subjects. Most issues contained an original woodcut, lithograph, linocut or etching commissioned by the publishers. Such well known American printmakers of the time as Stow Wengenroth, Paul Landacre, Emile Ganso, Victoria Hutson Huntley, Earl Horter, Kenneth Ballantyne, Thomas Nason and David Milne contributed original works of graphic art. The Colophon published its prints in editions ranging from 1,750 to 2,500. Stow Wengenroth's original lithograph, An Eastport Wharf appeared in The Colophon in New York in 1934. All are provided in the listing below.
The Print Connoisseur: The first issue of The Print Connoisseur was published in 1920. It published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis until December 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each usually contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Lynd Kendall Ward, John Winkler, Vojtech Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America. Lynd Ward contributed nineteen original woodcuts for the October, 1930 issue of The Print Connoisseur, African Drummer, Man at Labor, from "Midsummer Night", Night Walk, from "Midsummer Night" and sixteen others. Harry Everett Townsend contributed nine original linocuts to the January, 1930 issue, they include, Balzac (Portrait of the French Novelist, Honore de Balzac), Roshinara, Self Portrait and six others.
Works Progress Administration (W.P.A): During the era of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt's administration sponsored a relief program, the Works Progress Administration (1935 to 1943). Original printmaking was a major element of the W.P.A. and sixteen subsidized graphic workshops were created during the Depression era. The most productive programs emerged in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland. The original lithographs, woodcuts and etchings created through this program provide a unique and fascinating record of the times. Without its aid the many great works of art created by this generation would not have been made. The W.P.A. operated chapters for artists in almost every major city until it was suspended at the end of 1943. Seen on this page, Gardening by Isadore Weiner was published by the Works Progress Administration in 1938.
