American Art of the Depression Era dating from 1930 to 1945 (Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - Artist Index: K to P): Even in a Depression the sense of a continuation of normal activities persists. In Joseph Margulies, New England Granny the subject does exactly what grannies do best as she contentedly sits in her rocker, sewing. Philip Parsons depicts a joyful family reunion in Home for Christmas and Henry Pitz depicts the dignity of work in his monumental art deco style in both Maine Fisherman and Man Against the Sky.
Purely by alphabetical accident this page also contains two of my favorite night scenes: Alan Lewis’ delightful color woodcut, Swinging the Gate and Martin Lewis’ renowned Night in New York. This famous etching was published by the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1932.
Page three of the Art of the Print 'American Art of the Depression Era' directory contains a list of over fifty original works of art created by American artists during the Great Depression. This directory also lists a selection of the active art publishers, associations, groups, clubs, and societies located in major cities throughout the United States in the 1930's. These organizations provided an opportunity for American artists to work and create original art during the Great Depression. These include the American Artists Group, the Associated American Artists, New York, the Buffalo Print Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Lone Star Printmakers, the Prairie Print Makers, the Print Club of Cleveland, the Print Club of Philadelphia, the Print Club of Rochester, the Society of American Etchers, the Indiana Society of Printmakers, the Society of Washington D.C. Artists and the Syracuse Print Club. A brief description of some of these organizations is provided below.
American Artists Group: Founded in 1934, the American Artists Group of New York was one of the most interesting experiments of the Depression era. its aim was to produce original prints (the large majority being either lithographs or woodcuts) at prices that could be afforded during these difficult economic times. By 1938 this publisher had issued well over one hundred prints by such great artists as Emil Ganso, Alan Lewis, Warren Newcombe, Benton Spruance, Leo Meissner Rudolph Ruzicka, Julius Lankes and others. Most were published in unsigned, unlimited editions at the price of $2.75 each. Alas, this small price was still out of the reach of most and A.A.G. editions rarely exceeded three hundred impressions and many were printed in editions of less than one hundred. Anna Karenina in Hollywood and New England Meeting House by Warren Newcombe were both published by the American Artist Group in 1937. J. J. Lankes, Sunday Afternoon, Barbara Latham's Fording The Stream and Leo John Meissner's, Sea Gulls were published by them in 1936. images of these original prints are provided below.
Associated American Artists (A.A.A.): One of the longest running and most successful American print publishers of any era even began its operations in this decade. The Associated American Artists of New York issued its first catalogue of etchings for sale in January of 1935. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's and 1970's as contributing artists included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Gregory Masurovsky, Jack Coughlin and Sidney Chafetz. Grove Street by Frank Kleinholz, (1944), Napoleon Bridge, Paris (c. 1930), by Joseph Margulies and the two original lithographs, Man Against the Sky (c. 1935), and Maine Fisherman (1937), by Henry Clarence Pitz are all early examples of A.A.A. prints from this decade.
Chicago Society of Etchers: Established in 1910, the Chicago Society of Etchers was devoted to promoting the fine art of etching until its demise in 1972. The Society held Traveling exhibitions throughout the United States and also held an annual exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. The associated members (only), were issued an original etching created by one of its members each year. The members included such artists as, Clifford Addams, Stanley Anderson, John Taylor Arms, George A. Bradshaw, George Burr, Antonio Carbonati, A. Hugh Fisher, Thomas Handforth, Bertha E. Jacques (Founding Member), Martin Lewis, Arthur Millier, Louis Rosenberg, Ernest D. Roth, Will Simmons, J. W. Winkler, Emily Burling Waite, Alonzo C. Webb, Franklin T. Wood and many other American and International artists. In 1932 the Chicago Society of Etchers commissioned Martin Lewis for its annual print. Lewis responded with one of his greatest etchings, Night in New York, which is offered for sale in its original envelope, below.
Cleveland Print Makers: Founded in 1932 by Kalman Kubinyi, the Cleveland Print Makers established the 'Print-a-Month' series, in which subscribers would receive an etching, lithograph or woodcut each month for a year. Artists received a $50. salary for each commission and every print was published in a limited, signed edition of 250 impressions. Contributing national artists included Adolph Dehn, Emil Ganso, Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Rockwell Kent. Among the leading Cleveland area artists were George Adomeit, Paul Travis, William Sommer, Frank Wilcox, Kalman Kubinyi, Elsa Vick Shaw, Teresa Schmotzer and Honore Guilbeau. This series was the first of its kind and successfully raised revenue for the artists as well as making original art affordable during the Great Depression years. The 'Print-a-month' series continued until 1937. In 1934 Kalman Kubinyi contributed two original aquatints to the Print-A-Month project, The Fisher Bastion, Budapest, Hungary and Sun Flower. Both these works of art are included on this page.
Print Club of Philadelphia: Founded in 1915, the Print Club of Philadelphia was dedicated to the appreciation, study, collection and creation of original prints by American and international printmakers . The Club's exhibition program included annual juried shows, retrospective exhibitions, as well as traveling exhibitions. It published editions of prints by important American and International artists such as, Mabel Dwight, E. H. Suydam, J. J. Lankes, Celia Cregor Reid, Ralph Pearson, Elizabeth Norton, Rockwell Kent, Michael J. Gallagher, Phyllis Sloane and others. The Print Club changed its name in 1996 to the Print Center and continues to support the same high standards of its predecessor.
Print Club of Rochester: Since its creation in 1930, the Print Club of Rochester has been devoted to the fine art of printmaking. It offers workshops, lectures and once a year sponsors exhibitions for its members. The club also commissions an original print to be distributed to its club members annually. It has commissioned original etchings, engravings, lithographs, woodcuts and other forms of original graphic art from such fine American artists as Thomas W. Nason, Harvey Breverman, Henry Emrson Tuttle, Charles Hewitt, Norman Arthur Bate, Luigi Lucioni, Ernest Fiene, J. J. Lankes, Rockwell Kent, Mervin Jules, Catherine Kernan, Clare Leighton, Samuel Chamberlain, Dorothy Lathrop, Allen Lewis, Henry Pitz, Clare Romano and Lynd Ward. Henry Pitz's original lithograph, Maine Fisherman was the fourth annual presentation print commissioned in 1937 by the Print Club of Rochester, New York, and is illustrated on this page.
The Colophon: Founded in 1929, The Colophon, A Book Collectors' Quarterly is well known to collectors of both original printmaking and the book arts. During the 1930's and 1940's it published quarterly issues pertaining to these subjects. Most issues contained an original woodcut, lithograph, linocut or etching commissioned by the publishers. Such well known American printmakers of the time as Stow Wengenroth, Paul Landacre, Emile Ganso, Victoria Hutson Huntley, Earl Horter, Kenneth Ballantyne, Thomas Nason and David Milne contributed original works of graphic art. The Colophon published its prints in usually unsigned editions ranging from 1,750 to 2,500. Seen below, Barns and Wooded Hillside by Thomas Willoughby Nason and Still Life by Hans Alexander Mueller appeared in The Colophon in New York in 1939.
Works Progress Administration (W.P.A): During the era of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt's administration sponsored a relief program, the Works Progress Administration (1935 to 1943). Original printmaking was a major element of the W.P.A. and sixteen subsidized graphic workshops were created during the Depression era. The most productive programs emerged in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland. The original lithographs, woodcuts and etchings created through this program provide a unique and fascinating record of the times. Without its aid the many great works of art created during the 1930's would not have been made. The W.P.A. operated chapters for artists in almost every major city until it was suspended at the end of 1943.
