American Art of the Depression Era dating from 1930 to 1945 (Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - Artist Index: F to J): This is the second page dealing with American art created during the Great Depression. Like the previous page, it also contains a listing of over fifty original watercolors, drawings, etchings, lithographs woodcuts, serigraphs, linocuts, wood engravings and other mediums of original graphic art from the Depression decade of the 1930’s and into the early 1940’s. However, this page only includes links to works of art created by American artists whose last names start with the letter 'F' and end with the letter 'J'.
One of the more interesting aspects of art of the Depression is how seldom the actual misery and privation of the decade is depicted. On this page, for example, only Hugo Gellert’s original lithograph, Primary Accumulation, protests the contemporary state of affairs. The visual arts (including films) set out to divert and entertain. Perhaps for artists an almost sure recipe for failure would have been to remind the average man of his sorry condition.
On the contrary most areas of the entertainment industries thrived. The art of Kenneth Hartwell is an excellent example. His lithographs of circus acrobats, jugglers and clowns and of the music, dancing and comedy of the Burlesque shows are worlds into themselves. Gazing at his imagery the viewer is granted a temporary reprieve from the real world.
Page two of the Art of the Print 'American Art of the Depression Era' directory contains a list of over fifty original works of art created by American artists during the Great Depression. The four pages of this directory also include a short history of the major art publishers, associations, clubs, and societies situated in major cities throughout the United State such as Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Buffalo, Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco and elsewhere. These organizations provided an opportunity for American artists to work and create original art during the Great Depression. These include the American Artists Group, the Associated American Artists, New York, the Buffalo Print Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Lone Star Printmakers, the Prairie Print Makers, the Print Club of Cleveland, the Print Club of Philadelphia, the Print Club of Rochester, the Society of American Etchers, the Indiana Society of Printmakers, the Society of Washington D.C. Artists and the Syracuse Print Club. A brief description of some of these is provided below.
American Artists Group: Founded in 1934, the American Artists Group of New York was one of the most interesting experiments of the Depression era. its aim was to produce original prints (the large majority being either lithographs or woodcuts) at prices that could be afforded during these difficult economic times. By 1938 this publisher had issued well over one hundred prints by such great artists as Emil Ganso, Alan Lewis, Warren Newcombe, Benton Spruance, Leo Meissner Rudolph Ruzicka, Julius Lankes and others. Most were published in unsigned, unlimited editions and A.A.G. editions rarely exceeded three hundred impressions and many were printed in editions of less than one hundred. Emil Ganso's original woodcut, Studio Mirror was published in 1936 by the American Artists Group and may be viewed in the listing below.
Associated American Artists (A.A.A.): One of the longest running and most successful American print publishers of any era even began its operations in this decade. The Associated American Artists of New York issued its first catalogue of etchings for sale in January of 1935. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's and 1970's as contributing artists included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Gregory Masurovsky, Jack Coughlin and Sidney Chafetz.Included on this page, Ernest Fiene’s original lithograph Winter Evening (1936), and Irwin Hoffman’s original etching, Puerto Rican Folk Song (1938), are early examples of A.A.A. prints from this decade.
Chicago Society of Etchers: Established in 1910, the Chicago Society of Etchers was devoted to promoting the fine art of etching until its demise in 1972. The Society held traveling exhibitions throughout the United States and also held an annual exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago. The associated members (only), were issued an original etching created by one of its members each year. The members included such artists as, Clifford Addams, Stanley Anderson, John Taylor Arms, George A. Bradshaw, George Burr, Antonio Carbonati, A. Hugh Fisher, Thomas Handforth, Bertha E. Jacques (Founding Member), Martin Lewis, Arthur Millier, Louis Rosenberg, Ernest D. Roth, Will Simmons, J. W. Winkler, Emily Burling Waite, Alonzo C. Webb, Franklin T. Wood and many other American and International artists.
Cleveland Print Makers: Founded in 1932 by Kalman Kubinyi, the Cleveland Print Makers established the 'Print-a-Month' series, in which subscribers would receive an etching, lithograph or woodcut each month for a year. Artists received a $50. salary for each commission and every print was published in a limited, signed edition of 250 impressions. A few of the contributing artists included Adolph Dehn, Emil Ganso, and Rockwell Kent. Among the leading Cleveland area artists were George Adomeit, Paul Travis, William Sommer, Frank Wilcox, Kalman Kubinyi, Elsa Vick Shaw, Teresa Schmotzer and Honore Guilbeau. This series was the first of its kind and successfully raised revenue for the artists as well as making original art affordable during the Great Depression years. The 'Print-a-month' series continued until 1937. Honore Guilbeau contributed at least four original lithographs entitled, Mexican Roofs (1937), Night (1932), Still Life (C. 1935), and To Market (1935), to the Print-A-Month project and may be viewed below.
Prairie Print Makers: Formed in 1930 by a group of prominent Kansas artists, the Prairie Print Makers was an organization devoted to the promotion and creation of fine American prints at an affordable price that would appeal to all collectors. They annually commissioned one of their members to create an original print in the medium of lithography, etching, drypoint, aquatint, or wood engraving to be given to all of the members of the club. The prints were usually issued in an edition of 200 impressions. In order to sell their prints, they held traveling exhibitions. The club's early members included, such artists as, Coy Avon Seward, Birger Sandzen, Herchel Logan, Norma Bassett Hall, Arthur Hall, Charles Capps, Stow Wengenroth, Leo Courtney, LLoyd Foltz, Leo Meisnner, James Swan, Margaret Ann Gaug, Clarence Hotvedt, Edmund Kopietz, Maynard Dixon, and other important American artists of the period. A selection of the famous Gift Prints issued by the Prairie Print Makers include, Birger Sandzen's A Kansas Creek (1931), Levon West's The Prairie Rider (1933), C. A. Seward's, Adobe Village, New Mexico (1936) Stow Wengenroth's New England Village (1940), Clair Leighton's, Corn Pulling (1952), James Swan's Willow (1953) Leo Meisnner's Tidal Surge (1961) and their last print was by Charles M. Capps Idyl of New Mexico, (1965). In total, there were thirty one original Gift Prints issued frrom 1930
The Colophon: Founded in 1929, The Colophon, A Book Collectors' Quarterly is well known to collectors of both original printmaking and the book arts. During the 1930's and 1940's it published quarterly issues pertaining to these subjects. Most issues contained an original woodcut, lithograph, linocut or etching commissioned by the publishers. Such well known American printmakers of the time as Stow Wengenroth, Paul Landacre, Emile Ganso, Victoria Hutson Huntley, Earl Horter, Kenneth Ballantyne, Thomas Nason and David Milne contributed original works of graphic art. The Colophon published its prints in editions ranging from 1,750 to 2,500. On this page one will find Emil Ganso's original woodcut, Bathers (1933), Louis Hechenbleikner's original Woodcut, Pieta (1934), Earl Horter's original aquatint engraving, Bookshop (1933), and Victoria Hutson Huntley original lithograph, Gardenia (1931), all published by The Colophon.
The Print Connoisseur: The first issue of The Print Connoisseur was published in 1920. It published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis until December 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each usually contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Lynd Kendall Ward, John Winkler, Vojtech Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America. Paul Honore contributed at least two original woodcuts to the January of 1930 issue Carol Singers and Peace be With You: The Honore's and Theodore Hapgood's original woodcuts, Greetings from Theodore B. Hapgood Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Cora and Herbert Farrier also appeared in the same issue of the Print Connoisseur that month. These works are included in the illustrations below..
Works Progress Administration (W.P.A): During the era of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt's administration sponsored a relief program, the Works Progress Administration (1935 to 1943). Original printmaking was a major element of the W.P.A. and sixteen subsidized graphic workshops were created during the Depression era. The most productive programs emerged in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland. The original lithographs, woodcuts and etchings created through this program provide a unique and fascinating record of the times. Without its aid the many great works of art created within thes trying times would not have been made. The W.P.A. operated chapters for artists in almost every major city until it was suspended at the end of 1943.
