American Art of the Depression Era dating from 1930 to 1945 (Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - Artist Index: A to E): The following four pages contain a listing of over two hundred American etchings, lithographs woodcuts, serigraphs, watercolors, drawings, linocuts and wood engravings from the Depression decade of the 1930’s and into the early 1940’s. Despite the dire economic times publishers of original prints continued to survive. There were many art publishers, associations, clubs, groups and societies situated in major cities throughout the United States. These organizations provided an opportunity for American artists to work and create original art during the Great Depression. A few of the artist groups from this period that are mentioned in the Art of The Print 'American Art of the Depression Era directory' include the American Artists Group, the Associated American Artists, New York, the Buffalo Print Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Lone Star Printmakers, the Prairie Print Makers, the Print Club of Cleveland, the Print Club of Philadelphia, the Print Club of Rochester, the Society of American Etchers, the Indiana Society of Printmakers, the Society of Washington D.C. Artists, the Syracuse Print Club, the Woodstock Artists Assosiation, as well as many other important associations. A brief description of some of these is provided below.
Associated American Artists (A.A.A.): One of the longest running and most successful American print publishers of any era even began its operations in this decade. The Associated American Artists of New York issued its first catalogue of etchings for sale in January of 1935, for the standard price of $5.00 each. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's and 1970's as contributing artists included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Gregory Masurovsky, Jack Coughlin and Sidney Chafetz. George Elmer Browne’s The Fishing Fleet (1936), John Wesley Carroll's Ribbons (1939), and Adolf Dehn’s Threshing Near Kilkenny (1939), are early examples of A.A.A. prints from this decade, and are offered below.
Buffalo Print Club: Established in 1931, the Buffalo Print Club was devoted to the study, creation and promotion of fine prints until its demise in 1962. From 1931 to 1962, the organization held most of its annual exhibitions at the Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY in order to promote the art of both its members and national printmakers. Its members included such artists, as Kevin B. O'Callahan (founder), James Koenig, Niels Yde Andersen, Lewis W. Rubenstein, William J. Schwanekamp, and others.
Chicago Society of Etchers: Established in 1910, the Chicago Society of Etchers was devoted to promoting the fine art of etching until its demise in 1972. The members included such artists as, Clifford Addams, Stanley Anderson, John Taylor Arms, George A. Bradshaw, George Burr, Antonio Carbonati, A. Hugh Fisher, Thomas Handforth, Bertha E. Jacques (Founding Member), Martin Lewis, Arthur Millier, Louis Rosenberg, Ernest D. Roth, Will Simmons, J. W. Winkler, Emily Burling Waite, Alonzo C. Webb, Franklin T. Cleveland Print Makers: Founded in 1932 by Kalman Kubinyi, the Cleveland Print Makers established the 'Print-a-Month' series, in which subscribers would receive an etching, lithograph or woodcut each month for a year. Artists received a $50. salary for each commission and every print was published in a limited, signed edition of 250 impressions. Contributing national artists included Adolph Dehn, Emil Ganso, Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Rockwell Kent. Among the leading Cleveland area artists were George Adomeit, Paul Travis, William Sommer, Frank Wilcox, Kalman Kubinyi, Elsa Vick Shaw, Teresa Schmotzer and Honore Guilbeau. This series was the first of its kind and successfully raised revenue for the artists as well as making original art affordable during the Great Depression years. The 'Print-a-month' series continued until 1937. In 1932, William Phelps Cunningham contributed an original linocut entitled, Fruit Shop Villefranche to the Print-A-Month project, which is included in the illustrations below.
Indiana Society of Printmakers: Founded in 1934, by Evelynne Mess, George Jo Mess, Frederick Polley and Louis Oscar Griffith, the Indiana Society of Printmakers is a prominent organization devoted to the promotion and creation of fine prints by Indiana printmakers. Their early members included Jacob Howard Euston, Chester Leich, Constance Forsyth, John Lehman, Herbert Waters, Charles Surendorf, and others. From the beginning, the Indiana Society of Printmakers held annual exhibitions to promote the art of its members. In 1952, they held the 'First Biennial Exhibition of 50 Indiana prints' at the John Heron Art Museum. It was a juried exhibition that included members of the Indiana Society of Printmakers and other leading Indiana artists. Evelynne and George Jo Mess also founded and taught at the Circle Art Academy (1927-1932).
Lone Star Printmakers: Organized in 1938 by a group of leading Dallas artists, the 'Lone Star Printmakers' created and published original prints with special interest in Texan landscapes and themes. Prairie Print Makers: Formed in 1930 by a group of prominent Kansas artists, the Prairie Print Makers was an organization devoted to the promotion and creation of fine American prints at an affordable price that would appeal to all collectors. They annually commissioned one of their members to create an original print in the medium of lithography, etching, drypoint, aquatint, or wood engraving to be given to all of the members of the club. The prints were usually issued in an edition of 200 impressions. In order to sell their prints, they held traveling exhibitions. The club's early members included, such artists as, Coy Avon Seward, Birger Sandzen, Herchel Logan, Norma Bassett Hall, Arthur Hall, Charles Capps, Stow Wengenroth, Leo Courtney, LLoyd Foltz, Leo Meisnner, James Swan, Margaret Ann Gaug, Clarence Hotvedt, Edmund Kopietz, Maynard Dixon, and other important American artists of the period. Capps Idyl of New Mexico, (1965). In total, there were thirty one original Gift Prints issued frrom 1930 until its demise in 1965.
Society of Washington D.C. Artists: Established in 1891, the Society of Washington D.C. Artists was formed in order to promote and exhibit the art of its members. Most of the exhibitions were held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, one of the oldest privately supported institutions in Washington D.C. Its early members and exhibitors included American artists such as, Emma Cheves Wilkins, Caroline Van Hook Bean, Felicie Waldo Howell, Lloyd Embry, Paul Arlt, Dorothea Schwarcz Greenbaum, Sullivan Goss, Kenneth Stubs, Samuel Bookatz, John Chapman Lewis, Eleanor Parke Custis, Charles Courtney Curran and other fine artists.
Syracuse Print Club: The group was originally organized as an art class around 1932 by Hibberd Van Buren Kline, illustrator, etcher painter and also professor of art at the Syracuse Universtity. The classes were taught at the Syracuse Fine Arts Museum. However the 'Syracuse Print Club' was not officially created until 1936. It was decided that the club membership was to be by invitation only and they would hold annual shows to promote the artist's works. The Syracuse Print Club changed its name in 1940 to the 'Syracuse Printmakers' and continued to hold annual juried exhibitions. In 1946, they also held traveling exhibitions in various museums such as the Arnot Museum in Elmira and the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica. The Club's early members included, Harry G. Aitken, Wilford Addison, Edith Noble, Edith Roddy, Edith Horle, Edith Hough, Edith Wilcox, Aleyne Webber, Prudence Burg and others. The Brooklyn Society of Etchers: Founded in 1915, The Brooklyn Society of Etchers held their annual exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from 1916 until 1930. Its founding members included Ernest Roth (President), Troy Kinney, Eugene Higgins, Fred Reynolds, Paul Roche, and Susan A. Hutchinson. From (1915-1930), their members included such great American artists as, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, Edward Hopper, Will Simmons, John W. Winkler, Mary Cassatt, and other important American artists from this period. In 1931, due to the increased membership by artists from other states, such as, Harold Kerr Eby, Louis Conrad Rosenberg, Arthur William Heintzelman, Carl J. Nordell, George Elbert Burr, Earl Horter and many other American artists, it was decided to change the name of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers to the Society of American Etchers, Inc. Included in the images below are George Elbert Burr's Evening, Arizona ( 1930), Harold Kerr Eby's, Cornwall (1927), and Louis Conrad Rosenberg's Porticus of Octavia, Rome by which were all commissioned by The Brooklyn Society of Etchers.
The Colophon: Founded in 1929, The Colophon, A Book Collectors' Quarterly is well known to collectors of both original printmaking and the book arts. During the 1930's and 1940's it published quarterly issues pertaining to these subjects. Most issues contained an original woodcut, lithograph, linocut or etching commissioned by the publishers. Such well known American printmakers of the time as Stow Wengenroth, Paul Landacre, Emile Ganso, Victoria Hutson Huntley, Earl Horter, Kenneth Ballantyne, Thomas Nason and David Milne contributed original works of graphic art. The Colophon published its prints in editions ranging from 1,750 to 2,500. Kenneth Ballantyne's original linocut, Wood Nymphs appeared in The Colophon in New York in 1931, and is illustrated below.
The Print Connoisseur: The first issue of The Print Connoisseur appeared in 1920. It published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis until December 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each usually contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Lynd Kendall Ward, John Winkler, Vojtech Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America. Alexander Couard contributed an original linocut entitled, Steel in July of 1930 and that same year, George Elbert Burr also created Little Canyon, Arizona and Morraine Park for The Print Connoisseur. These fine prints are illustrated below.
Works Progress Administration (W.P.A): During the era of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt's administration sponsored a relief program, the Works Progress Administration (1935 to 1943). Original printmaking was a major element of the W.P.A. and sixteen subsidized graphic workshops were created throughout the nation during the Depression era. The most productive programs emerged in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland. The original lithographs, woodcuts and etchings created through this program provide a unique and fascinating record of the times. Without its aid the many great works of art created in this decade would not have been made. The W.P.A. operated chapters for artists in almost every major city until it was suspended at the end of 1943.
Woodstock Artists Association (WAA): Founded around 1919, the Woodstock Artists Association, a colony for the arts in Woodstock, New York, became one of the leading arts centers in America. From the beginning, it was responsible for running exhibition spaces and setting artistic policies for its members. Known for its diversity of expression, it was committed to grant equal opportunities for both realist and abstract artists within the community and to create and exhibit art of different types of genres, styles and medias. The organization opened its summer season each year with a membership show. Early members of the association included such artists as, John Carlson, Frank Swift Chase, Andrew Dasburg, Carl Eric Lindin and Henry Lee Mcfee, George Bellows, Rosella Hartman, Paul Fiene, Marion Greenwood, Harry Gottlieb, Yasuo Kuniyshi, Emile Ganso, Rockwell Kent, Arnold Grant, John Carroll and others.
