Bonnemaison: Original lithographs were published by Bonnemaison in Paris dealing with the art of Boilly, Genot, Gerard, Chretien and others. Some of the most famous early lithographs come from a portfolio entitled, Gallerie de Madame la Duchesse de Berri: Ecole Francais: Peintres modernes. Its aim was to portray the art of contemporary French painters in the de Berri collection. The lithographs were published between 1822 and 1824.
Cadart: During the 1850's and 1860's Cadart was the leading French publisher of original etchings. Delatre printed the majority of etchings. Delatre was perhaps one of the greatest printer of all times. Meryon, Whistler, Laurens and Jacquemart are just a few of the artists of the period that had Delatre print their original etchings.
The 'Societe des Aqua-Fortistes' was founded by Cadart in 1862. Until its demise in 1867, it was responsible for publishing some of the greatest French art of this important era.
George Barrie: From 1893 to 1895, the Philadelphia publisher, George Barrie, was at work upon a large and lavish series of original lithographs and etchings detailing exhibits of all the fine arts from participating countries of the World's Columbian Exposition. These prints mainly dealt with the paintings and sculpture that were exhibited there.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany, The Print Connoisseur, in America and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, Vervielfaltigende Kunst became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, it superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market.

Edition: | Most of Whistler's great lithographs were published in small editions of 100 examples or less. Many were printed in only a handful of impressions. Because of their scarcity these prints command very expensive prices. Thankfully a small grouping were commissioned to be published by leading English art journals and periodicals of the day, such as The Studio, The Whirlwind, and The Art Journal. Lithographs from these and several other publications were published in editions from one to two thousand. The Doctor - Portrait of my Brother was commissed in 1895 for the 1896 number of the arts and literary annual, The Pageant. The Pageant published for only two years. Its art editor was Charles Hazelwood Shannon (a fine lithographic artist in his own right) and its literary editor was J. W. Gleeson White. The 1896 issue contained this valuable and original lithograph as well as reproductions of the art of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne Jones, Charles Shannon and Charles Ricketts. |
