Also mention must be made of Henri Beraldi, the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Societe des Aqua-Fortistes, and the etchings by French artists that were published by these companies. We must not forget to include the German publisher, Vervielfaltigende Kunst. They have all published some of the finest original graphic works of art. If you wish to view the entire list and access this information, please go to the www.artoftheprint.com (Featured Publisher's History) page . You will find a brief history for most of the publishers listed.
Cadart: During the 1850's and 1860's Cadart was the leading French publisher of original etchings. Delatre printed the majority of etchings. Delatre was perhaps one of the greatest printer of all times. Meryon, Whistler, Laurens and Jacquemart are just a few of the artists of the period that had Delatre print their original etchings.
The 'Societe des Aqua-Fortistes' was founded by Cadart in 1862. Until its demise in 1867, it was responsible for publishing some of the greatest French art of this important era.
Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The Gazette des Beaux-Arts began publishing in 1859. From the beginning of its publication the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic works of art. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Appian, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Liebermann, Maclaughlan, Besnard and others and from the beginning of our century to the last publication in 1930 such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Gobo and the American, John Sloan and others from this period responded with original etchings. It is easy to see why original works published by the Gazette Des Beaux-Arts have long been collected.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst: A Viennese art publisher, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued its first original graphic work in 1871. During the following sixty years, it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Swiss, French, Czech and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most print publishers of the time, it took a leading role in the revival of original graphic art. Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as one of the most vital art publishers of its day and individual prints from this publication are highly coveted by collectors.
