Le Charivari: The golden age of French satirical art is generally held to be the decades of the 1830's and 1840's. A daily journal entitled, Le Charivari (1832 - 1916), led the attack against political leaders, royalty, priesthood and any other groups and individuals. At least one original lithograph was published with each issue, and the artists who contributed were among the greatest satirical masters of any era. The most notable contributor to the journal was Daumier.
Vanity Fair: The first issue of 'Vanity Fair' was published in London on November 7, 1868. Founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, the purpose of this weekly publication was to display current vanities and those responsible for them. Each issue contained a full page, original chromolithographic portrait of a popular sovereign, statesman or man of the day, caricatured in a smooth, good-natured manner, which became famous as the 'Vanity Fair Style'. The last issue of 'Vanity Fair' was published in 1914. Through its forty-five years of history, it produced some of the most memorable caricatures of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Title: | The Bible - Genesis: From the Creation until the Deluge (The Complete Portfolio of 25 Original Color Lithographs) |
Artist: | Pann, Abel (Kreslawka, Vitebsk, White Russia, 1883 - Jerusalem, 1963) |
Date: | 1924 |
Medium: | The Complete Portfolio of 25 Original Color Lithographs |
Publisher: | The Palestine Art Publishing Company, Jerusalem |
Size: | 16 3/4 X 12 1/4 (Paper Size) |
Buy Now | Price: $2,200.00 US |
Condition: | As each of the sheets was initially bound into the portfolio in the manner of a three-ring binder there are three small holes on the right hand margins. Three sheets of introductory text as well as the Frontispiece lithograph (Eve Offering the Apple to Adam) are printed on a thinner wove paper. As such the binding holes have given way. The remaining twenty four lithographs are printed on a much thicker wove paper which has also been reinforced with a linen backing along the right margin. The binding holes on each of these lithographs is thus completely intact. |
Sight water staining is evident in the extreme lower margins of several lithographs. In every case it is well removed from both the actual image and the stone signature under it. As well, the boards of the portfolio contain some scuffing and staining. Else each lithograph is in very good condition throughout without a trace of light staining or toning. In all this complete set of The Bible, Genesis: From the Creation until the Deluge (The Complete Portfolio of 25 Original Color Lithographs) represents both a scarce and important, original example of the art of Abel Pann and of early Israeli lithography.
Note: | Note: LeRoy Latham's original notes concerning Abel Pann and The Bible are included with this purchase. |

Title: | The Five Books of Moses |
Artist: | Pann, Abel (Kreslawka, Vitebsk, White Russia, 1883 - Jerusalem, 1963) |
Date: | 1930 |
Medium: | The Complete Portfolio of 47 Original, Hand-Signed Color Lithographs |
Publisher: | The Palestine Art Publishing Company, Jerusalem |
Provenance: | From the estate of Leroy Latham and thence to his heirs. Leroy Latham (1874-1938) was Chairman of Latham Lithographing Company (Latham Litho & Printing Co.). Situated in Brooklyn, New York, it was one of America's largest lithographic printing establishments in the early twentieth century. His large print collection consisted of many fine examples of French and British nineteenth century lithographs as well as contemporary lithographs, etchings and wood engravings. |
Size: | (15 1/2 X 11 1/2 size of 45 lithographs) and (15 1/2 X 23 size of two lithographs) |
Buy Now | Price: $7,800.00 US |
Condition: | All forty-seven original lithographs are printed upon white, wove paper and with full margins. Each is signed in the stone (below the image) and signed in pencil (within the image). Every lithograph is loosely housed in paper matting. Lithographs #45 and #46 are double page works of art and thus contain the vertical centrefold. The title page and Pann's justification page (from which the quotation in the opening paragraph is taken) are present. The matted lithographs are housed within their original case, with linen boards and spine. Both boards contain some scuffing and staining. |
Forty-four of the forty-seven original lithographs are in excellent condition. Three lithographs (#11, #15 and #16) contain slight scuffing in the outer margins. Interestingly, they also contain parts of fingerprints in ink on the lower margins (recto) and to the verso. Unlike the other lithographs these three contain registration marks on the outer edges of the paper. Finally, all three contain small pin holes along the upper margins. In all probability, these were Abel Pann's printer's proofs which would have been fixed to the wall in order for him to compare the quality and tones of edition impressions. In conclusion this magnificent set of The Five Books of Moses represents both a scarce and very important example of the art of Abel Pann, one of Israel's greatest early twentieth century artists.
Note: | Leroy Latham's hand written notes concerning each lithograph for The Five Books of Moses is included with this purchase. He notes the "smudges" which I listed for lithographs 11, 15 and 16. This indicates that they were not added at a later date and thus more strongly indicates that they were Abel Pann's proofs. |

Title: | Kathe Kollwitz |
Artist: | Patterson, William (Albany, New York, born, 1941) |
Date: | 1976 |
Medium: | Original Etching & Aquatint |
A number of William Patterson's original etchings and aquatints deal with imaginative portrayals of past artists who have pervaded his artistic outlook. Thomas Eakins, John Sloan and William Blake have been subjects for some of his art.
Kathe Kollwitz: The subject of this etching and aquatint is, of course, a portrayal of the young Kathe Kollwitz. One of the greatest original printmakers of the twentieth century, when Kollwitz died in 1945 she left a legacy in her art and life of the courage and compassion of the human heart. Kathe Kollwitz, then, is a tribute to one great artist from another. How else would one explain the power and emotion produced by this remarkable work of art? This is truly a most exceptional contemporary etching.

Title: | The Modern American City (Untitled Drawing) |
Artist: | Pennell, Joseph (Philadelphia, 1857 - Brooklyn, New York, 1926) |
Date: | c. 1920 |
Medium: | Original Pen and Ink and Wash Drawing (with the Accompanying Book entitled, "Pen Drawing and Pen Draughtsmen") |
Joseph Pennell's The Modern American City: In 1921 the British publisher, T. Fisher Unwin Ltd., issued a revised and updated edition of Joseph Pennell’s classic book, "Pen Drawing and Pen Draughtsmen". The edition was limited to 250 copies on Japan paper, signed and numbered by Joseph Pennell opposite the title page. Furthermore, Pennell contributed an original drawing to 150 of these books, which was bound and tipped in to the first page of the book. Such is the case with this original drawing. Joseph Pennell has signed this drawing, ‘J. Pennell’, on the verso. He has also written other words on the verso, some of which I am unable to decipher. To the upper left, however, Joseph Pennell has written, "United Kingdom", which would make sense because he was living in the United States at this time and would then have shipped the drawings of his choice to the London publisher for inclusion in the book. This drawing, which I have titled, "The Modern American City", is crucial to Joseph Pennell’s thoughts upon what he saw as the deterioration of American art, architecture and culture during the 1920’s. A detailed examination of this important, original drawing follows below. |
|
Size: | 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 |
Buy Now | Price: $1800.00 US |
Condition: | Joseph Pennell probably made this intriguing drawing in one of his notebooks as it is on two sheets of uniform sized paper. He then glued the two sheets together, probably shortly before sending it off to London to be tipped into the book, as described in the opening paragraph. Slight glue staining exists along this vertical line. Signed and annotated on the verso. Apart from the glue staining this original drawing is in excellent condition throughout and obviously represents a most important work of art by one of America’s greatest artists. The book, Pen Drawing and Pen Draughtsmen, is signed by Pennell opposite the title page and numbered ‘218’ of 250. Slight chipping is apparent on the top of the spine, else in very good condition throughout. A previous owner has made a handsome, linen case for the book and attached the original paper label to it. |

Publisher: | Vervielfaltigende Kunst, Vienna |
Note: | Robert Philippi: An Austrian painter and printmaker, Robert Philippi studied art in his native Graz before opening a studio in Vienna. During the early twentieth century, Philippi exhibited his paintings, woodcuts and etchings in Vienna, Prague, Munich, Cologne and Berlin. Philippi was associated first with Austrian Secessionism and later turned to German Expressionism (c. 1915), particularly in his woodcuts and etchings. Torichte Jungfrau is a striking example of Philippi's Expressionist technique and style. |
Of particular interest is the fact that Philippi was also a noted teacher of printmaking techniques and that in 1914 one of his private students was none other than Egon Schiele (1890-1918). Schiele studied both the art of the woodcut and etching from Philippi during this year.
