Associated American Artists: the Associated American Artists of New York was founded in the mid 1930's. The Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's as contributing artists included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Irwin D. Hoffman and Sidney Chafetz.
Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The Gazette des Beaux-Arts began publishing in 1859. From the beginning of its publication the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic works of art. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Appian, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Liebermann, Maclaughlan, Besnard and others and from the beginning of our century to the last publication in 1930 such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Gobo and the American, John Sloan and others from this period responded with original etchings. It is easy to see why original works published by the Gazette Des Beaux-Arts have long been collected.
The Portfolio: The British publishing company, The Portfolio was England's leading art journal of the latter nineteenth century. Founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), it published annual issues from 1870 to 1892. Hamerton was the influential author of such classic books as Etching and Etchers and for The Portfolio he regularly commissioned such great British etchers as Seymour Haden, D. Y. Cameron, Ernest George and Robert Walker MacBeth to contribute original art. Today these etchings are collected as valuable examples of fine nineteenth century British art.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst: A Viennese art publisher, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued its first original graphic work in 1871. During the following sixty years, it published masterworks by English, German, Swiss, French, Czech and Austrian artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most print publishers of the time, it took a leading role in the revival of original graphic art. Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as one of the most vital art publishers of its day and individual prints from this publication are highly coveted by collectors.

Date: | c. 1960 |
Medium: | A Bound Collection of Six Original Graphite Drawings and their Unique, Carbon Transfer Prints |
Note: | This collection of six unsigned drawings and their carbon transfer prints represents an important examination of Alexander Minewski's artistic techniques. Bound within an artist drawing book each page measures 9 X 11 1/2 inches. Before each graphite drawing the artist positioned a sheet of carbon paper underneath, resulting in an individual print on the following page. Alex Minewski then transformed these prints into unique works of art by scraping away at the carbon with usually short horizontal or vertical lines. He thus experimented with and altered these prints into fragmented abstractions derived from the original drawings. |

Condition: | Glued inside the front cover is an exhibition catalogue entitled, "Alex Minewski: 20 Years of Drawings". The exhibition took place at the Washington Irving Gallery, New York City, October, 1959. The catalogue is illustrated with six black and white illustrations of Minewski's graphite and pen and ink drawings. The text was written by the American artist, Ernest Fiene (1894-1965) and a short biography was assembled by the gallery director, Bernhardt Crystal. It is unknown whether this bound collection was included in the exhibition, or was created shortly thereafter. The fact that Alex Minewski included this catalogue with this collection, however, indicates that these six drawings and six prints were created around this time. |
