Associated American Artists: the Associated American Artists of New York was founded in the mid 1930's. The Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's as contributing artists included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Irwin D. Hoffman and Sidney Chafetz.

Condition: | Drawn on fifteenth century vellum and with full margins. Contains Gothic textura quadrata script in brown ink with several lines in red clay. With multiple two-line versal initials on both sides of the leaf alternating in blue tempra and red. These initials, with their elaborate calligraphy, are set within uniquely designed frameworks. Slight fading, as usual, to the brown ink on the verso side of the vellum, else this work of art is in superb condition throughout and is indicative of the Italian Renaissance illumination at its finest. |

Note: | On early fifteenth century vellum and with full margins. Contains twenty-one lines in round Gothic textura quadrata script in black ink with several lines in red clay. Prominent capital letters on both sides are set within yellow coloured frameworks. With one large decorative initial in red with elaborate illumination in blue encompassing the length of the leaf. This spectacular initial indicates why early Italian leaves are so highly coveted. |

Condition: | There is slight rubbing to the margins of the vellum on both sides, as usual. On the verso side (line two) the word 'auxiliatus' appears in succession. The first 'auxiliatus' has been partly scratched out. Else, it is in superb condition throughout with strong, unfaded lettering and colouring. This original, early fifteenth century Epistolary represents the art of Italian Renaissance illumination at its finest. |

Provenance: | Game Piece was initially in the collection of Roger Trlak. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Jacob Landau, Birgit Skiold, Derrick Greaves and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Contemporary prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death. |
