Date: | 1747 (Heath Edition 1822) |
Medium: | Original Etching & Line Engraving |
Publisher: | Heath Edition, London |
Industry & Idleness Plate 1 | The Fellow Prentices at their Looms (Industry and Idleness, Plate 1): William Hogarth portrays the two apprentices as they begin their journey on an entirely equal footing. Both begin at the same shop and under identical circumstances. Francis Goodchild, the Industrious apprentice, sits to the right. He is diligently at work upon his loom and beside him rests a well preserved copy of 'The Prentices Loom" . To the left (and fast asleep) is the Idle apprentice, Thomas Idle. A cat plays with his working equipment. Symbols of his dissolute life already surround him -- a mug of ale from 'Spittle Fields', a pipe at rest on the motionless loom and a page from Moll Flanders tacked on the post above his head. This, of course, refers to Defoe's famous novel concerning a promiscuous serving girl. |

Edition: | Plate 1; Paulson #168, Second and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 2 | The Industrious Prentice Performing the Duty of a Christian (Industry and Idleness, Plate 2): The second and third scenes outline the apprentices' attitudes towards religion. In Plate Two, Goodchild performs his religious duties in the same dedicated manner as his work. Besides him is the daughter of his master. To the left a pew opener sits with her back towards the ceremony. For the most part the congregation is attentive and well behaved. Only the snoring figure behind the industrious apprentice reminds us of Hogarth's more biting studies of church life such as, The Sleepy Congregation and Credulity, Superstition and Fanaticism. |
Raisonne: | Ronald Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, London, Yale University Press, 1965. |
Edition: | Plate 2; Paulson #169, Second and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 3 | The Idle Prentice at Play in the Church Yard, During Divine Service (Industry and Idleness, Plate 3): In William Hogarth's third engraving, Tom Idle has neglected participation at the service in favour of gambling in the graveyard beside the church. The game actually takes place upon a grave and under Tom's reclining form the words, 'Here', 'Body' and 'Of', are visible. Thus the Idle Apprentice may very well be sitting upon his own grave. He attempts to cover his money with his hat, dangerously inviting the wrath of the three disgusting players to the right. Behind him a beadle unsuccessfully attempts to beat some sense into him. In the background decent human beings enter the church. |

Edition: | Plate 3; Paulson #170, Second and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 4 | The Industrious Prentice a Favourite, and Entrusted by his Master (Industry and Idleness, Plate 4): Goodchild's ways are paying dividends. His clothes and wig illustrate his growing wealth. He has been promoted and befriended by his master, Mr. West, as symbolized by their joined gloves on the desk. To the left a porter from the city of London delivers cloth. Idle is nowhere to be seen and in his place a row of women work upon their looms. Prosperity is clearly in evidence. |
Raisonne: | Ronald Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, London, Yale University Press, 1965. |
Edition: | Plate 4; Paulson #171, Second and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 5 | The Idle Prentice Turn'd Away, and Sent to Sea (Industry and Idleness, Plate 5): Dismissed from his career as a weaver (the indenture is floating in the water), Idle turns to the unsavory occupation of sailor. One companion taunts him with a lash while the other points both towards their ship and to the gallows on the shore. The other occupant of the boat is Idle's widowed mother, who pleads with him to mend his ways. He responds by making a cuckold sign with his fingers. |

Edition: | Plate 5; Paulson #172, Third and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 6 | The Industrious Prentice out of Time, and Married to his Master's Daughter (Industry and Idleness, Plate 6): Increased wealth and happiness continues to follow Goodchild. He has married his master's daughter and the couple appear in the window of their well to do house. The sign above them --'West and Goodchild -- indicates that the Industrious Apprentice is now a full partner. Goodchild, however, knows his duty to those less fortunate. He rewards the drummer and his fellow musicians for their efforts and his footman gives the leftovers of the feast to a needy mother and child. To the left the lame and crippled seek similar aid. |

Edition: | Plate 6; Paulson #173, Fourth and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 7 | The Idle Prentice Returned from the Sea, and in a Garret with a Common Prostitute (Industry and Idleness, Plate 7): This scene stands as a direct comparison to William Hogarth's preceding engraving. Idle too has found 'love', but in the mercenary arms of a prostitute. The set of pistols on the floor indicates that he has again changed professions and has become a highwayman. The door to the shabby room is thoroughly locked and barricaded, indicating perhaps that he is on 'the run'. Idle is suddenly awakened by a cat chasing a rat down the chimney; his hair is on end and his face is ridden with fear. Oblivious, his companion admires the spoils of her night's work. |

Edition: | Plate 7; Paulson #174, Second and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 8 | The Industrious Prentice grown Rich, And Sheriff of London (Industry and Idleness, Plate 8): Goodchild now assumes a major political post. He is seen in the background, with his wife, presiding over the lavish banquet. In the foreground officials gorge on their food and drink. Hogarth never missed an opportunity to describe the sin of gluttony in full detail. |
Raisonne: | Ronald Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, London, Yale University Press, 1965. |
Edition: | Plate 8; Paulson #175, Second and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 9 | The Idle Prentice Betray'd by his Whore, and Taken in a Night Cellar with his Accomplice (Industry and Idleness, Plate 9): In this scene, William Hogarth makes it clear that Tom Idle has now 'graduated' from a thief to a murderer. Dividing the spoils of the crime, an accomplice stuffs the victim's body down a chute. Behind Idle, his prostitute betrays him to the magistrate for the price of a single piece of silver. In the riotous background of the thieves' den (actually based an edifice called, 'Blood Bowl House'), a maid whose nose has been lost to syphilis brings the ale. |

Edition: | Plate 9; Paulson #176, Fourth and Final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 10 | The Industrious Prentice Alderman of London, The Idle One Brought before him and Impeached by his Accomplice (Industry and Idleness, Plate 10): This scene sets in motion the same left and right side contrasts in evidence in Plate One. Goodchild, now Alderman of London, is despairing the wasted life of his former colleague as he sentences him to the 'Turnkey of Newgate.' Tom Idle pleas in vain, the instruments of murder hoisted above his head. His faithful mother again attempts unsuccessfully to stem the course of events. |

Edition: | Plate 10; Paulson #177, Second and final State. |
Size: | 10 1/2 X 13 3/4 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 11 | The Idle Prentice Executed at Tyburn (Industry and Idleness, Plate 11): In the final two scenes William Hogarth increases the length of his plates to deliver large views of crowds. Here the Idle Apprentice nears his execution. In the cart with him is his coffin and a Methodist preacher. In desperation he reads the Bible. Perhaps he has been converted at the last minute. In the background a pigeon is released to signal the approach of the prisoner. The hangman is relaxing on the gallows, smoking his pipe. Several carts are lined up to the right. The central wagon contains some prostitutes, enjoying the festivities and drinking. In the next cart Idle's mother is again seen weeping. |

Edition: | Plate 11; Paulson #178, Third and Final State. |
Size: | 10 3/4 X 16 |
Industry & Idleness Plate 12 | The Industrious Apprentice Lord Mayor of London (Industry and Idleness, Plate 12): The newly elected Lord Mayor sits in his coach and leads a procession of guilds displaying various banners. Spectators watch and cheer. Others, however, occupy themselves in activities such as drinking or love making. To the right a comic group of city militia mill about. One stupidly discharges his gun. Besides them a boy holds a broadsheet entitled, "A full and true Account of ye Ghost of Tho. Idle" . The gala occasion is observed the Prince of Wales and his peers, who occupy the upper balcony. |
