American Lithographic Company: Born of English parents in Quebec City, Napoleon Sarony learned lithography from his father and emigrated to New York in 1836. There, he worked as an apprentice for several lithographers, including Nathaniel Currier. In 1846 Sarony opened a lithographic business in partnership with Henry Major. The company went through a number of alterations in names and partnerships. Until 1853, it was called 'Sarony and Major'. From 1853 to 1857, it bore the title which appears on this original lithograph, 'Sarony & Company'. From 1857 to 1864, the company name was expanded to, 'Sarony, Major & Knapp'. Later, the company would assume the title of the 'American Lithographic Company', and became the largest such business in North America
King Features Syndicate: King Features Syndicate was established in 1915 by none other than William Randolph Hearst -- the wealthy newspaper magnate and the individual whom Orson Wells based his Citizen Kane upon. Hearst created the company to syndicate his comics throughout the thousands of American newspapers. As the years rolled by, King Features was responsible for such well known comics as Blondie, Flash Gordon, Popeye and Betty Boop. Today it is the world's largest distributor of comics, columns and editorial cartoons.

Edition: | Only a small handful of impressions were taken from the plate in 1876. Around 1912, however, M. G. Pellet acquired the plate and pulled 25 impressions from it. Several decades later the plate was steel faced and further impressions were struck. Judging from the brilliance of this impression and from the fine Japon paper it is printed on I would suspect that it is from the Pellet edition of twenty-five impressions. |
