You will find a brief history for most of the publishers listed.
The American Art Review: Inspired by the European etched art of Whistler, Meryon, Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879-1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas and Peter Moran, Otto Bacher, J. M. Falconer, Robert Swain Gifford, Henry Farrer, Samuel Colman, John Foxcroft Cole and James D. Smillie.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst: A Viennese art publisher, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued its first original graphic work in 1871. During the following sixty years, it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Swiss, French, Czech and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most print publishers of the time, it took a leading role in the revival of original graphic art. Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as one of the most vital art publishers of its day and individual prints from this publication are highly coveted by collectors.

Condition: | Printed upon wove paper and glued onto a thin sheet of cardboard. As Ralph Fabri's hand written sales sticker appears on the verso (provided with our documentation), I would assume it was backed on board at the time of publication or shortly thereafter. As well, there is some matte staining in the outer margin and light toning within the image. Paper loss appears along the lower margin, particularly in the lower left corner. Finally a crease is evident in the central left margin running about two inches into the image (by the fleeing horse). Being backed upon board, the paper is somewhat brittle. Any further deterioration is now unlikely as the lithograph is now secured in an acid free matting and backing. As stated earlier, this is both a scarce and important work of early art by Ralph Fabri and every effort has been taken to preserve it. |

Artist: | Falma? |
Date: | C. 1970 |
Medium: | Original Colour Aquatint and Etching |
Edition: | Limited Edition of twenty impressions, Numbered 4/20. |
Provenance: | From the archives of the Associated American Artists of New York. The Associated American Artists was created in the mid 1930's and commissioned original graphic art from such great American masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and many others. During the 1950's and 1960's it published lithographs and etchings by artists of no less distinction, such as, Jack Levine, Sidney Chafetz, Alexander Dobkin and Marion Greenwood. Its archives housed a major collection of twentieth century American art. |
Note: | Because of its difficult, multiple printings, the creation of colour aquatints and etchings is rarely within the domain of the amateur artist. Particularly within its finely crafted range of colouration and tonal values it is unlikely that Always a Bridesmaid was created by anyone but an accomplished etcher. |
