Title: | Felicite de Lamennais (F. de la Mennais) A Set of Three Original Working Proof Engravings |
Artist: | Calamatta, Luigi (Civitavecchia, Italy, 1801 - Milan, 1869) |
Date: | 1847 |
Medium: | Original Engravings: A Set of Three Working Proofs, with Additions in Graphite |
Publisher: | Gihaut Freres, Paris |
Provenance: | From the collection of John J. Peoli (New York, 1825 - Sagua la Grande, Cuba, 1893). |
Size: | 15 1/2 X 12 (X 3) |
Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Price: | Sold |
Condition: | All three engravings are printed on a heavy wove paper. Proof #2 has margins trimmed to within 1/8" to the plate-mark. Minor foxing is also evident. Proof #3 contains an overall toning due to water staining. An archival cleaning would eliminate this completely. The margins are extra large and the corners have been folded, presumably for plate registration. A pin prick is also seen to the upper centre, just under the plate mark. Proof #5 contains slight water staining in the upper right and lower right margins. As noted earlier, proofs #2 and #5 contain the double plate-mark. |
All three engravings are strongly printed impressions, as one would expect for such early working proofs. These three original engravings represent a most valuable record as to the methods used by Luigi Calamatta, one of the great portrait engravers of the 19th century.

Raisonne: | Frank Rinder, D. Y. Cameron. An Illustrated Catalogue of his Etchings and Drypoints, 1887-1932, Glasgow, 1932. CATALOGUE # RINDER 433. |
Edition: | Although many fine reference books have been written upon the etched art of D. Y. Cameron, confusion still prevails as to the edition size of many of his plates. With the exception of a few, unsigned etchings he submitted to arts periodicals like the Studio, almost all were published in very small editions of twenty-five or less. This was particularly true of the last drypoints, such as, Ralia, for unless the plate is steel-faced, a drypoint will only yield a maximum of twenty satisfactory impressions. Also, Cameron was a most meticulous artist. Many of his etchings and drypoints exist in a number of states, which were printed in only one to five impressions for each alteration to the plate. Ralia is known to exist in at least five states and in all probability less than five impressions were printed for every state. |
