Note: | Max Zimmermann 'Mac Zimmermann': One of Germany's most famous Surrealist artists of the post war era, Mac Zimmermann first studied at the Werkschule in Stettin. He moved to Hamburg in 1934 and worked there as both a stage designer and as an art instructor. Mac Zimmermann then moved to Berlin in 1938 to study the art of the 'Pittra metafisica' movement. His first paintings were exhibited in Berlin in 1940. |
With the commencement of the Second World War (1939-1945), Zimmermann was forced to abandon his experiments in painting as the National Socialist Dictatorship smothered all artistic expression. Max Zimmermann's first major exhibition took place in Berlin in 1946. In 1948 his prints and paintings were included in the Venice Biennale. In 1950 Zimmermann was awarded the art prize from the city of Berlin and also became a founding member of the Deutschen Kunstlerbundes. Zimmermann accepted the post of Professor at the Berliner Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in 1958. In 1964 he moved to Munich to accept the post of Professor of Art at the Muncher Akademie. From this position he taught such fine, contemporary German artists as Hinnerk Schrader, Peter Collien and Reiner Schwarz.
For Mac Zimmermann lithography and etching played as important a role in his artistic oeuvre as painting. His fine prints and paintings have thus been exhibited internationally since 1950. Today his art is included in the collections of many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum Ostdeutsche Galerie, Regensburg, and Georgetown University.
Dreams, of course, lie at the center of Mac Zimmermann's great art. Like all great surrealist masters he has created a unique, private world which both attracts and challenges our inner selves.
