Marco Zim: Born in Moscow, Marco Zim
immigrated to the United States in 1885. He studied art in New York at
both the National Academy of Design, under Ward and Maynard, and the Art
Students League, under George Grey Barnard, and in Paris at the Ecole
des Beaux Arts. Returning from France, Marco Zim worked in New York until 1910.
In 1911 he had moved to San Diego where (along with Maurice Braun) he
founded the San Diego Academy of Art. From 1914 to 1916, Marco Zim maintained
studios in Los Angeles and then resided in Santa Barbara until approximately
1925. After that date he returned to New York, living first on University
Avenue and then West 74th Street. |

Marco Zim was a well recognized painter, etcher
and sculptor. He was a full member of the Artland Club of Los Angeles,
the Los Angeles Painters and Sculptors Club, the California Art Club,
the San Francisco Art Association and the Society of American Etchers.
His art is today included in such major American collections as the Library
of Congress, Washington, DC, the New York Public Library, the Art Institute
of Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. |

Approaching Storm was created by Marco Zim
shortly after his 1925 return to New York. On the verso, Zim has written,
"Approaching Storm, etching by Marco Zim, 2552 University Av., N.Y. City,
5/30. |

Printed upon vellum-like wove paper and with
large, full margins. Signed and titled by the artist in pencil under the
lower plate-mark. Some creasing and thin spots are evident as at some
time the etching was glued to a backing and lifted from it. Considerable
glue marks still exist on the verso. Else a finely printed, strong impression.
Approaching Storm represents a prime, original example of the famous
art of Marco Zim. |
