Duty

Lee Woodward Zeigler’s original drawing, "Duty", portrays an anxious swordsman, perhaps awaiting a battle’s beginning. Six small pinholes surround his figure. This drawing was thus probably utilized as a preparatory study for a larger paining or mural. Zeigler has titled this drawing to the upper right, above a separate vignette of a hand.

"Duty" is drawn upon hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as created by Zeigler between 1910 and 1920. It bears his official red estate seal to the lower right corner. This drawing contains the graceful Art Nouveau lines and tones typical of his allegorical studies. It is a fine, original example of the art created by the American artist, Lee Woodward Zeigler.

Note:	Lee Woodward Zeigler: A fine late nineteenth and early twentieth century muralist and oil painter, Lee Woodward Zeigler studied at the Maryland Institute of Art. By the turn of the century Zeigler had established a large reputation for his paintings and murals in both the United States and Great Britain. He was a full member of the Hudson Highland Art Association, the Medieval Academy of America, the American Federation of Arts and Britain’s prestigious Royal Society of Artists. Zeigler also created a number of fine drawings and illustrations for the "Magazine of Art", beginning in 1909.
	During the first decades of the twentieth century Zeigler was much in demand for both his portraits and his allegorical figure studies. In the former category he painted many military portraits, such as the portrait of Washington which is now in the collection of West Point. The allegorical studies, however, were often commissioned as public murals and reveal more delicate, less formal tendencies within the artist’s oeuvre. This original drawing was probably a preparatory study for one of these works. Zeigler’s art from this period usually contains the graceful Art Nouveau lines and tones one sees in this beautiful example entitled, "Duty". This original drawing was in the collection of the artist himself and thus bears the official red estate stamp along the lower margin.
