Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni

Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni - Germany Divided Into Circles L'Alemagne

Map of Germany Divided Into Circles (L'Alemagne)

Title: Map of Germany Divided Into Circles (L'Alemagne)
Geographer: Zannoni, Giovanni Antonio Rizzi (Padoa in 1736 - Naples in 1814 )
Date: 1762
Medium: Original Engraving
Source: French edition of Zannoni's Atlas
Note: At an early age, Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni had established himself as Italy's greatest geographer and indeed as on of Europe's finest cartographers of the time. This map entitled, "Germany Divided Into Circles (L'Alemagne)" hails from "Zanonni's monumental World Atlas" of 1762. Scholars point to these large maps as being among the most accurate and detailed of all eighteenth century maps, as well as being, "superbly engraved and with delightful cartouches." *. This engraved map of the German the states is surely indicative of Giovanni Zannoni's fine work. Hundreds of towns, cities and rivers are delineated and a large and graceful cartouche with the German eagle is seen in the lower left corner. This is a striking eighteenth century map of Germany and its environs.
Original maps from the eighteenth century are distinctly different from those that followed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. With their complex outline colourings and highly decorative cartouches, these maps can be viewed as either geographical and political histories or as beautiful works of art. One is immediately intrigued not only by the speculations on unexplored lands but by the changes in counties and territories throughout the western world. There is an ever changing story in national borders.
Unfortunately, eighteenth century maps are very scarce. These were the days before lithography and steel and wood engraving -- methods, which in the nineteenth century made large editions of prints possible. A copper plate engraving, such as this original example, could yield at best about two hundred impressions before wearing down the plate. Thus these important maps are valuable not only for their age but for their rarity.
