c. 1949 -1950 |

Note: |
Yvon Monay or 'Antoine Monay':
Despite his very short life, Yvon Monay established a strong reputation throughout
France for his fine paintings and etchings of landscapes, still-lifes and
figure studies. A nephew of the painter, Pierre Monay, Yvon Monay exhibited his
art in Paris, Lausanne and elsewhere from 1944 until the year of his death
in 1954. His actual name was Antoine Monay but throughout his career he
chose to use the pseudonyms of either 'Yvon'; or 'Yvon Monay'. |
|
"Reflects sur la Seine" (Reflections on the Seine)
is an outstanding example of Yvon Monay's realist art. Etched from an elevated level (perhaps the artist's
studio) the scene depicts a grouping of homeless men on the banks of the
Seine. Some sleep while others aimlessly sit. To the left a man reads a
cast off newspaper. Behind them and in the Seine are the reflections of
several famous, historic landmarks of Paris on the opposite bank, thus
providing a strong juxtaposition to their condition. |
|
"Reflects sur la Seine" (Reflections on the Seine)
bears the printed number, 'No. 49', in the plate to the lower right. This might indicate that this
original etching was the 49th work of art Yvon created, or it may be the
year it was made (1949). |
|
Matted with 100% Archival Materials |
Size: |
5 5/8 X 7 3/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.) |

lower left margin and signed by the artist in pencil under the plate-mark.
Containing very slight mat burning in the outer margins (about one half
inch from the plate-mark), else a strongly printed impression and in very
