John J. Young and Heinrich Balduin Mollhausen - Chimney Peak From The Colorado River

Chimney Peak From The Colorado River

John J. Young's & Heinrich Balduin Mollhausen's original lithograph, "Chimney Peak From The Colorado River" was created in 1857. H. B. Mollhausen was specifically assigned to the Ives Expedition which travelled up the Colorado River and into the then, mostly unexplored, Grand Canyon. This topographical view was printed by the New York lithographic company of Sarony, Major and Knapp at the date stated above. "Chimney Peak From The Colorado River" is a fine, original example of the 19th century landscape art created by the important survey and exploratory artists of the American West, John J. Young and Heinrich Mollhausen.

In 1857, the Secrerary of War commissioned Lieutenant Joseph C. Ives to determine if the Colorado River was navigable. Ives had a miniature steamboat constructed in Philadelphia and then had it transported in pieces by ship to the mouth of the Colorado River. For the next six months Joseph Ives and his men steamed up the river for over three hundred miles and then set out to explore the Grand Canyon by mule. This View portrays Joseph Ives and his crew steaming through the Mohave Canyon, with Chimney Peak in the background.

Source: The Ives Colorado River Expedition
Note: John J. Young: An important survey and exploratory artist of the American West, John J. Young worked both as a topographical engineer and as a staff artist for the United States War Department. Between 1853 and 1857, John Young drew onto stone the sketches of Mollhausen and Von Egloffstein for the report of Lt. Whipple’s 35th parallel survey. Later, in 1855, Young was selected as head artist for Lt. Williamson’s railway survey to connect California’s Sacramento Valley with Oregon’s Columbia River.
John J. Young went on in the 1860's and 1870's to make both lithographs and watercolors of scenes ranging from Santa Fe to Utah. He continued to be employed as an artist by the War Department in Washington until his death.
Heinrich Balduin Mollhausen: An artist and author of the American West, H. B. Mollhausen was known as “the German Fenimore Cooper”. He attended the Gymnasium at Bonn and then became a farmer in Pomerania. After fighting in the German Revolution of 1848, he sailed for the United States, first settling in Illinois. Two years later Heinrich Mollhausen joined an expedition to the Rockies.
In 1853 Heinrich B. Mollhausen was named an artist for the government surveys to establish a railway route to the Pacific. He was specifically assigned to the 35th parallel expedition (under the command of Lt. Whipple) which left Arkansas in 1853 and traversed Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and California’s Mojave Desert. The Company arrived in the west coast of California (Los Angeles) on March 21, 1854.
Heinrich Balduin Mollhausen was then appointed an artist for the Ives expedition along the Colorado River in 1857 and visited the Grand Canyon in the following year. Afterwards he returned permanently to Germany, writing all of 178 books. Many of these deal with adventures based in the American West and portray both Indian and pioneer life.
The Ives Expedition: In 1857, the Secrerary of War commissioned Lieutenant Joseph C. Ives to determine if the Colorado River was navigable. Ives had a miniature steamboat constructed in Philadelphia. The steamboat was then transported in pieces by ship to the mouth of the Colorado River. For the next six months Ives and his men steamed up the river for over three hundred miles and then set out to explore the Grand Canyon by mule. Joseph Ives was the first man to map major parts of the Grand Canyon. This original lithograph from this historic expedition portrays Ives and his crew steaming through the Mohave Canyon, with Chimney Peak in the background. Mohave Indians line the bank in the foreground.
From both a geographic and scientific standpoint, the Railroad expeditions were a valuable accomplishment. The western territories were extensively explored and mapped and the knowledge associated with the fields of geology and biology in these areas was tremendously increased. The lithographs created from these surveys were published in twelve large volumes between 1855 and 1860 by the War Department under the title of, "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean". The majority of the topographical views, such as this original example, were printed by the New York lithographic company of Sarony, Major and Knapp.
Napoleon Sarony (Quebec, 1821 - New York, 1896): Born of English parents in Quebec City, Napoleon Sarony learned lithography from his father and emigrated to New York in 1836. There, he worked as an apprentice for several lithographers, including Nathaniel Currier. Sarony then opened a lithographic business in partnership with Henry B. Major. The company went through a number of confusing overlapping alterations in names and partnerships. It was called 'Sarony and Major' (c. 1846 - 1857. Then Sarony's company bore the title, 'Sarony & Company' (c. 1853-1857). During the mid 1850's, Joseph Fairchild Knapp (1832-1891), entered the firm and the name of the company was expanded to, 'Sarony, Major & Knapp' (c 1855 - c. 1864), Chimney Peak From The Colorado River hails from this period. Around 1864, Sarony left the company to pursue a new career in photography. He rose to become one of America's most famous pioneers in this field and at this point, the firm then took on the name of, Major & Knapp around 1864, and by 1888 it became known as The Knapp Company. Around 1890, Joseph Palmer Knapp (1864-1951), purchased the company from his father and shortly after renamed it, the 'Joseph P. Knapp Co.'. Later, the company would assume the title of the 'American Lithographic Company (ALCO)', and from 1892 to 1929, it became one of the largest lithographic firms in North America. Then in 1929 the firm was purchased by the United States Printing & Lithographic Company, and the Consolidated Litho Company took over their label producing division.
