Yoshfuji

Yoshfuji - A Scene in Yokohama

A Scene in Yokohama

In Yoshifuji's "A Scene in Yokohama", the artist has depicted a standing Western man and woman as well as a very uncharacteristic building which is probably a trading warehouse constructed by a merchant's company. The remainder of this original woodcut, however, is pure and classic ukiyo-e art where perspective is deliberately flattened to produce strong design elements.

This original Japanese woodcut is printed on mid nineteenth century Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published by Tsutaya Kichizo between 1849 and 1853. "A Scene in Yokohama", is a superb example of both early Yokohama art and the classic talents of Yoshifuji.

Title: A Scene in Yokohama
Artist: Yoshfuji (1828 - 1887)
Date: 1849 - 1853
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut
Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo
Note: Yoshfuji: Many of Japan's greatest woodcut artists of the latter half of the nineteenth century studied in the workshop of the master artist and designer, Kuniyoshi (1798-1861). The most notable were Yoshitoshi, Yoshitora, Yoshikazu and Yoshifuji. The 'Yoshi' prefix, in fact, was somewhat like a title which indicated that these artists belonged to Kuniyoshi's famous school. As well, Yoshitora, Yoshikazu and Yoshifuji all designed 'Yokohama-e', that is woodcuts depicting foreigners in the city of Yokohama.
Along with the port of Nagasaki, Yokohama was one of the few Japanese coastal towns to allow closely restricted commerce with the outside world. Dutch and Chinese traders and merchants were usually partitioned from the population and remained in relative isolation until Commodore Perry sailed his warships into Yokohama harbour in 1854. Such restrictions, however, could not curtail Japanese curiosity with all things foreign, and this was reflected in the art of the woodcut.
By the early 1860's, Japan was quickly being transformed by the arrival of many Westerners. Hundreds of woodcuts were made to show the strange habits and dress of the newly arrived aliens. Yoshifuji's A Scene in Yokohama bears the censor's seal used from 1849 to 1853 and thus represents one of the rare, early views of Western activity in Japanese art.
In the background of this original woodcut, Yoshifuji has depicted a standing Western man and woman as well as a very uncharacteristic building which is probably a trading warehouse constructed by a merchant's company. The remainder of the image, however, is pure and classic ukiyo-e art where perspective is deliberately flattened to produce strong design elements. This is a superb example of traditional Japanese art.
Finally, mention should be made of the printing techniques of A Scene in Yokohama. With its complex array of colours, modulations and textures this is one of the finest examples of mid nineteenth century Japanese woodblock printing and design I have seen. A Scene in Yokohama bears the mark of the publishing house of Tsutaya Kichizo, which existed from 1800 to 1860. It is not surprising that many of Kuniyoshi's finest woodcuts were also produced by this publisher.
