Toshi Yoshida: A foremost twentieth century Japanese artist of the woodcut,
Toshi Yoshida was born into a family with a rich artistic tradition.
His father, Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950), was one of the leaders of early
twentieth century Shin Hanga woodcut art. His mother, Fujio Yoshida,
was also a painter and printmaker. Toshi Yoshida first studied woodcut
techniques in the studio of his father and at the Taiheiyo Art School
of the Pacific Arts Association. By the age of twenty he was producing
Shin Hanga woodcuts and had begun his extensive travels around the world.
In the following years Yoshida created woodcuts and paintings in such
areas as India, Ceylon, Africa, North America, Europe and even Antarctica.
After 1950 the artist produced fine woodcuts in both representational
and abstract forms. |

Toshi Yoshida was a full member of the Japanese Print Association.
Today the fine art of Toshi Yoshida is included in such international
collections as the National Museum of Australia, the Museum of Modern
Art, New York, Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Museum of Fine Arts,
Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo,
Krakow National Museum, Poland, and the British Museum, London. |

"Hummingbird and Fuchsia"
was created in 1971 when he taught printmaking techniques at the Mendocino Art Center. Toshi Yoshida both
taught and worked in the United States and in his native country, Japan. He educated students in his
influential woodcut techniques at the Mendocino Art Center and at the Art Institute of Chicago and
established a printmaking studio on the outskirts of Tokyo. |

Printed on mulberry paper and with full margins as created
by the artist in 1971. Signed in pencil by Toshi Yoshida to the lower
right. A superbly printed impression with full coloration and in excellent
condition throughout. "Hummingbird and Fuchsia" represents a large and
impressive example of the famous woodcut art of Toshi Yoshida. |
