Adam Wurtz's original etching and engraving, "Halloween" contains strong elements of both Surrealism and Primitivism. Here, Wurtz writes to the left, "Halloween on Canal Street." Most of this large etching portrays intertwined masks and faces. The center figure contains the text, "Subway and an arrow pointing downwards. This surreal, festive atmosphere is countered to the lower right by a walking figure in isolation. This impression is printed upon fine archival paper with the 'Arches' watermark and with full, deckled margins as published in the small edition of only twenty five impressions by the Pratt Graphics Center, New York in 1985. It is signed and dated in the plate "Wurtz A.:1985. XI 25. N. Y.", and signed "A. Wurtz", titled "Halloween", and numbered, '2/25' by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Note: | Adam Wurtz: A twentieth century Hungarian painter, illustrator and printmaker, Adam Wurtz studied art under the Hungarian artists, Hincz Gyula, Bortnyik Sandor, Por Bertalan, and Charles Koffan, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, Hungary. After Wurtz graduated around 1853, he continued his studies abroad. Wurtz exhibited his art in Hungary, Japan, Russia, Romania, Vienna, the United States, and elsewhere. This Adam Wurtz etching and engraving entitled, "Halloween" hails from his mid 1880's New York period. Awards received during his artistic career include, the Munkacsy Prize (1957-1966, 1970), Biennial Golden Pen of Beigrade (1968), Summer Exhibition Award, Szeged (1967), Artist of Merit in the international Commission Andersen Award IBBY (1986), and others. He was a member of the Creative Union of Artists and Engravers. During his career, Adam Wurtz also illustrated a number of books, such as, "The Giant from the Little Island" (New York, 1970), "Marti Grunbarts Abenteuer" (Budapest, 1974), Peter Brenner, "The Tears that Saved a Town: A Story" (London, 1975) Miklos Vamos, "Zenga Zenek" (Budapest (1983), Sir Walter Scott's "Kenilworth" (Berlin, 1979) and many other fine illustrated books. His original art is today included in the following collections; Princeton University Library, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Gutenberg Museum, Germany the Hermitage, Russia, the Puschkin Museum, Russia, the LaGuardia Community College, New York, and Miscolci Galeria, Hungary, as well as other important private and public institutions. |
