William Woollett's original engraving Frontispiece to Taylor's Perspective is based upon a design created by William Hogarth. Perspective was only one of Hogarth's many interests. The effects of perspective, line and form upon the foundation of art proved a compelling area of investigation for him and he explored these elements both in his art and in writings such as, Analysis of Beauty. This original engraving is one of Hogarth's most interesting experiments in this vein. Originally he designed this image for Kirbey's, Perspective of Architecture, first published in 1761. The second edition followed in 1765, with Taylor, the publisher, substituting his name for Kirbey. Finally, this engraving was published and printed for the last time in Heath's edition of the complete engravings of Hogarth which appeared in 1822. This impression hails from that set. It is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the British artists, William Woollett and William Hogarth. Frontispiece to Taylor's Perspective; Paulson Catalogue #242, Third and Final State. |

Note: | William Woollett: One of the giants of eighteenth century English engravings, William Woollett came from humble surroundings and was mainly self-taught. Yet some of the most famous English engravings of the era, such as, The Death of General Wolfe, bear his name. William Woollett was equally gifted in all genres, from historical art to architecture, landscape, portraits and figure studies. In particular, his style of engraving landscapes with deep and vigorous foregrounds contrasted with delicate backgrounds became very influential. His famous 'worm line' technique of engraving was imitated throughout Europe. |
William Woollett was a full member of the St. Martin's Lane Academy and in 1766 he was admitted into the Incorporated Society of artists. In 1775, he received the highest ranking when he was appointed, 'Engraver to the King'.
According to G. C. Williamson, * Woollett's life and death
provided several wonderful anecdotes. It is reported that all of London
was made aware of when Woollett completed an important engraving, for he
would fire a cannon from the roof of his house in Leicester Square. As well,
after succumbing to injuries received from a game of Dutch pins, William
Woollett was first buried in Old St. Pancras Churchyard with an unceremonious,
plain tombstone marking his resting place. On this stone some imaginative
and anonymous poet wrote the following verse,
"Here Woollett rests, expecting to be saved; He graved well, but is not well engraved." |
|
In part because of this delightful verse a large memorial was commissioned for Woollett in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey where he is now, "well engraved."
William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, mainly under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Rake's Progress (1731), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
