Charles Herbert Woodbury

Charles Herbert Woodbury - Pitch Pines Wood Road Pine Hill

Pitch Pines, Wood Road, Pine Hill

Charles Herbert Woodbury's "Pitch Pines, Wood Road, Pine Hill" is an original drypoint engraving created between 1907 and 1910. It is a fine example of the landscape art created by this late nineteenth and early twentieth century American artist. In all probability, This engraving is a working proof impression. Charles Woodbury has thus not signed this impression, but has fully written the title in pencil along the lower margin. He has also left arrow marks directly pointing to the plate-mark on all four sides. The meaning of these arrow marks is presently unknown.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Museum houses an extensive collection of Charles Herbert Woodbury's etchings and drypoints. It includes an identical impression of "Pitch Pines, Wood Road, Pine Hill", with the exception that their engraving is signed in pencil and titled only, "Pitch Pines" (#1990.084.078). This working proof impression therefore provides the full title which leads to both locating and dating this work of art. Charles Woodbury taught art techniques at the Pine Hill School from 1907 to 1910.

Charles Woodbury's first etching was made in 1882. This medium is as vital to understanding his art as his paintings or drawings. As in all his fine art "Pitch Pines, Wood Road, Pine Hill", displays Charles Woodbury's primary concern that the artist should create in 'verbs', not 'nouns'; meaning, motion and movement are the key to any composition. Here one sees the ever changing effects of breeze and light upon the trees.
