Johannes Wohlfart's "Blindenzug" (Procession of the Blind) depicts a parable familiar to artists since at least the Mediaeval era; the blind leading the blind. Johannes Wohlfahrt saw in this old fable a symbol for modern man with one lost soul simply leading another. This original woodcut entitled, "Blindenzug" is printed on hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as commissioned and published by "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" in 1927. It is signed in the block with Wohlfart's monogram. This work of art is a strong, original example of the Expressionist art by the 20th century Austrian artist, Johannes Wohlfart. |

"Blindenzug" (Procession of the Blind) depicts a parable familiar to artists since at least the Mediaeval era; the blind leading the blind. Johannes Wohlfart saw in this old fable a symbol for modern man with one lost soul simply leading another. The jagged, Expressionist lines and planes in this composition reinforce the extreme feelings of instability. One knows that disaster is close at hand.
In the early twentieth century the art of German and Austrian Expressionists transformed the world. In a culture devastated by global warfare and destruction, Expressionism was the visual vehicle of despair and crisis. The artist's medium of choice was not the painting but the print, specifically the woodcut. K. Sotriffer writes, "The Expressionists not only recalled the woodcut to life by being the first since the Middle Ages to rediscover and respect its peculiarities, they also raised it to an unexampled flowering." *. |

Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the late nineteenth early twentieth centuries leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by "The Studio", in London, "Pan", in Germany, "The Print Connoisseur", in America, and "Vervielfaltigende Kunst", in Vienna
"Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch, Hungarian and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, Vervielfaltigende Kunst became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, its superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market.
