Note:	John Winkler 'John W. Winkler': One of the finest American etchers of the early twentieth century, J. W. Winkler was born in Austria but settled in California early in his life. John W. Winkler studied under Frank van Sloun at the California Institute of Arts and published his first original etching in 1915. During the following eight years he established a large national reputation for his etchings, the great majority being depictions of San Francisco and its environs. By 1923 he had created 88 etchings which were often compared to the work of Whistler, particularly the Whistler etchings found in the 'French Set' and 'Thames Set'. Like Whistler, Winkler had the ability to capture life and movement with the utmost simplicity. One John Winkler scholar wrote, "His technique is so eminently suited to all that he wished to express that it has been little modified during these ten years past. He makes no preparatory designs, sketches or tracings; his impatient nature at no time permits of his delaying from attacking the copper once he has found the motive of the composition. All his plates have been etched directly from nature, after long search and careful observation, in the bustle of the streets or amid the coming and going of the passers-by." *
	In 1923, John Winkler moved to Paris and resided there for a period of five years. La Marchande de Legume is one of his Paris compositions. Returning to America, Winkler became a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers and the American Society of Illustrators. In 1936, Winkler was admitted into the prestigious National Academy of Design. Examples of John Winkler's original etchings are included in the collections of the Library of Congress, Washington DC, the Musee du Luxembourg, Paris, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York Public Library.
Edition:	La Marchande de Legumes (The Vegetable Merchant) was commissioned by The Print Connoisseur, New York, for its July, 1924 publication. John Winkler submitted fifty signed impressions (for the limited edition) as well as between 100 and 200 impressions (for the regular edition). This impression hails from the regular edition.
	The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Lynd Ward, John Winkler 'John W. Winkler', Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.

Condition:	Printed upon wove paper with the "LBN Voinon" watermark and with full margins as published by The Print Connoisseur in July of 1924. Signed in the plate with Winkler's '-W-' monogramme. Slight scuffing is apparent under the lower plate mark, else a delicately printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. This original etching represents a fine example of the famous art of John Winkler 'John W. Winkler'.
