Irving Ramsey Wiles: Although Irving Ramsey Wiles
created many fine landscape paintings and illustrations of various scenes,
he will always be remembered as one of America's most eminent artists
of the portrait. As a boy he studied art in the studio of his father,
the landscape painter, Lemuel M. Wiles (1826-1905). Upon his father's
advice, Irving Wiles went to New York in 1879 to study at the Art Students
League. He was taught there by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), an outstanding
portrait and figure painter. Chase became Wiles's mentor and the two artists
formed a lifelong friendship. Several years later, Wiles completed his
studies in Paris at the Academie Julien. |
|
Upon his return to New York, Wiles quickly established a
strong reputation. In 1886, Irving Ramsey Wiles was awarded the Hallgarten Prize from the
National Academy of Design. Many awards followed, not only within the
United States, but from institutions in Paris, London and Buenos Aires.
Irving Ramsey Wiles became an Associate of the prestigious National Academy
of Design in 1889 and a full Academician two years later. He was also
a member of the Society of American Artists (1887), the National Institute
of Art and Letters, the American Art Association of Paris, the American
Federation of Arts and the National Association of Portrait Painters.
Today, his art is included in such collections as the Corcoran Gallery,
Washington, the National Gallery of Art, Columbia University, the University
of Berlin, Germany, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. |
|
At the turn of the century, many of Irving Ramsey Wiles's drawings were
commissioned by such leading American periodicals as Scribner's, Harpers
and The Century. His work in this regard was mostly in the mediums
of pen and ink and wash drawings. Wiles's charcoal drawings, such as this
example, were mainly used as preparatory studies for his oil portraits
and figure designs. In his portraits, Wiles was an acknowledged master
of depicting mood and disposition. His unique ability to capture the sitter's
individuality placed him among the foremost portrait painters of his time.
In Portrait Study, Irving Ramsey Wiles draws a model who has just come out of
the cold of a New York winter. In her attire, gesture and facial features,
he brilliantly delineates her quiet resignation and poverty. Only a master
of the portrait such as Wiles could bring out such poignant truths. |
