Note: | Ernest Herbert Whydale 'Ernest Whydale': An exceptional British painter and etcher, Ernest Herbert Whydale studied art in both Birmingham and St. Leonards-on-Sea. He created his first etching in 1913 and continued through the 1930's. E. Herbert Whydale exhibited his paintings and etchings with both the Royal Academy and the Royal Engravers and was elected A.R.E. in 1920. |
E. H. Whydale's art focuses primarily on rural life. Scenes of ploughing, carting, farming and country markets and fairs figure prominently in his work. Especially in his etchings, Whydale brilliantly captured the fast disappearing English countryside.
Gypsies is one of Ernest Whydale's largest and most remarkable works of art. His bold use of space, the expressions he gives to both the fashionably dressed women and the gypsy violinist and the manner in which he renders the strong social contrasts between them, all make this a stunning work of art. Ernest Whydale's etchings were not issued in numbered editions, but none exceeded one hundred in number.
