Note: | Robert White: "There were few historic happenings of those eventful times that did not move Robert White's graver to portraiture. ... Princes, courtiers, statesmen, lawyers, churchmen, soldiers, writers, all came alike to Robert White's busy graver. And not only contemporary personalities appealed to him. He has left us a splendid head of old William Camden, of "Britannia" fame, and a most characteristic print of the redoubtable Earl of Cumberland, of Elizabeth's day, in full jousting array, with the Queen's glove, jewel-set, in his hat, as though he is about to challenge all comers to maintain that his mistress (not his wife, be it noted) is the ";most worthiest and most fairest", as was his favourite pastime."; * |
The last of England's great 17th century portrait engravers, Robert White apprenticed under David Loggan (d. 1693). During his long and distinguished career, White engraved the portraits of such contempories as King Charles I, King Charles II, King James II, General Monk, Buckingham, Lord Rochester, Samuel Pepys, George Herbert, Henry Purcell, Prince Rupert, Lady Anne Clifford, Henry Somerset, the First Duke of Beaufort, and many others.
Near the end of Robert White's career mezzotints surpassed line engravings as the favoured medium of portraiture. Even his son and student, George White (1671-1734), devoted most of his artistic efforts to the mezzotint portrait.
This fine portrait of William Camden was commissioned as the frontis piece for the 1695 edition of "Britannia".
William Camden: William Camden (London, 1551 - Chislehurst, 1623) devoted most of his life to the study of British history and antiquities. In 1586 he published his first edition of Britannia, which provided a detailed account of the history and topography of the British Isles from the earliest known ages. Later editions were considerably enlarged. In 1593 Camden was appointed head master of Westminster and, in 1597, Clarencieux king-at-arms. William Camden also wrote a narrative of the Gunpowder Plot and a history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. |
