Jan Wiegers an original woodcut, "Het Huis van Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Davos": This work of art is a paramount example of early twentieth century Dutch Expressionism. During the early 1920’s both Jan Wiegers and the German Expressionist master, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), resided in Davos, Switzerland. Wiegers’s association and friendship with Kirchner inspired his art and upon his return to Holland he introduced Expressionist elements and ideas, primarily through the Groningen movement known as “De Ploeg”. This beautifully printed impression of "The House of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Davos" is printed upon white mulberry paper and with large full margins. It is pencil signed and annotated by Jan Wiegers, “epreuve d’artiste” (artist’s proof). The large majority of Wiegers’s woodcuts, etchings and lithographs were not published in specific editions. Like Kirchner, however, Jan Wiegers printed most of his woodcuts himself and mainly in very small numbers. |

1920 was a pivotal year for Jan Wiegers. For reasons of respiratory health he moved to Davos, Switzerland. For similar reasons Kirchner had moved to the Davos region several years earler. Other Expressionist artists who joined Kirchner’s circle of influence included Albert Muller, Hermann Scherer and Philip Bauknecht.

Jan Wiegers moved to Amsterdam in 1934 and co-founded the arts magazine ‘De kroniek van kunst en kultuur’. Today the art of Jan Wiegers can be found in such collections as the Kunstmuseum, Bern, Groninger Museum, Groningen, Stedel Museum, Amsterdam and the Bundner Kunstmuseum Chur.
