Note: | Adelaide Webster-Donald 'Adelaide Webster': An important twentieth century Scottish/Canadian painter and watercolourist, Adelaide Webster had a promising start to her career. In 1899 she began regularly exhibiting her portraits and landscape studies at the Glasgow Institute and also completed her studies in Paris at this time. There she became acquainted with a number of important French artists of the day, including Edgar Degas. After the completion of her formal studies, Adelaide Webster lived and worked in both London and Paris. In London, she exhibited frequently with the Society of Women Artists (until 1919) and in France her early career was crowned by being awarded the prestigious Prix de Paris, in 1910. |
Adelaide Webster's career took an abrupt turn at the end of World War One when she married a Presbyterian Minister from Montreal. After moving to that Canadian city (c. 1920) she was not permitted to exhibit her paintings there due to her husband's rigid religious convictions. Adelaide Webster-Donald, however, managed to maintain a downtown studio on Crescent Street and became friends with some of Montreal's leading artists, such as Arthur Lismer and Harold Beament. After her husband's death in 1936, Adelaide Webster again exhibited her art at such venues as Montreal's Dominion Gallery. During her career in Montreal she was also commissioned to paint the portraits of many leading individuals, including Norman Bethune and Dame Sarah Fisher.
Palm Trees, Trinidad was created by Webster in the 1950's. Her landscape art during this period emphasized a number of Impressionist aspects. This is particularly true in her fine application of textures and colours and in her delineation of light and shade.
