Lithography was not invented in France, but it was the French
who first recognized the vast potential of this new medium as a fine art
form. Led by such masters as Delacroix, Gericault, Boilly, Vernet and
Charlet, a host of great artists were bringing the lithograph to the forefront
between 1810 and 1835. Such was the high regard in France for this new

La Bonne Mere (The Good Mother) is important on several levels. From
an artistic point of view, Antoine Weber has skillfully rendered a complex setting
and has used the new lithographic medium to perfectly display the qualities
of light and shade. On another level, few domestic scenes from this period
give us a glimpse of family life other than those of the noble and wealthy.
Here is a charming if somewhat idealized view of a working class household
complete with a wonderful attention to the many domestic details. |

La Bonne Mere (The Good Mother) originates from a portfolio entitled,
Gallerie de Madame la Duchesse de Berri: Ecole Francais: Peintres modernes.
Its aim was to portray the art of contemporary French painters in the
de Berri collection. Between 1822 and 1824, 120 original lithographs were
thus published by Bonnemaison in Paris dealing with the art of Boilly,
Genot, Gerard, Chretien and others. Some of the most famous early lithographs
come from this important set and all the prints are very scarce. |
