Note: |
Alonzo C. Webb: A fine American etcher, architect,
painter and illustrator Alonzo C. Webb studied art at the Art Institute
of Chicago and at the Art Students League of New York. In the First World
War he served with the American Engineering Force in France, first as
a sergeant and then as a commissioned second lieutenant. After the war
in 1988 he concluded his education at the A.E.F. Art Training Center in
Bellevue, France. |
|
During the 1920's and 1930's Alonzo Webb lived and worked
in both France (Montmartre) and the United States. He etched many great
architectural images of French and Italian cities and American centers
such as New York, Chicago and Pittsburgh. Many of Webb's European views
were published and exhibited by the Marcel Guiot, Gallery, Paris. |
|
Alonzo C. Webb was a full member of the American Art Association
of Paris and the Beaux Arts Architects. Today his original etchings are
included in the collections of the Government of France, the City of Paris,
the Bibliotheque Nacionale, Paris, the Chicago Art Institute and the New
York Public Library. |
|
This impression of La Petite Chapelle, Arques-La-Battaille
is marked "Ep (reuve) d'artiste" by Webb. This, then, is an artist proof
impression and was very likely the first impression taken from the completed
plate. La Petite Chapelle was commissioned by the Chicago Society
of Etchers and published by them in a limited edition of 100 signed impressions.
It was also exhibited at the Marcel Guiot Gallery, Paris, in May of 1930. |
Provenance: |
From the collection of Mrs. Ellis Hollingsworth, Boston.
After her death this etching was sold at auction at the Parke-Bernet Galleries,
New York, on October 11, 1940. |

Condition: |
Printed upon very thin hand-made, laid paper and with full
margins as published by the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1929. Signed
and Dated 'A. C. Webb, Sept., 1929' in the plate to the lower left and
signed, titled and annotated, "Ep(reuve) d'artiste", by Webb in pencil
along the lower margin. The etching exhibits signs of slight light toning
as well as some matt burning in the outer margins, else a beautifully
printed impression (as one would expect from an artist's proof) and in
good condition throughout. La Petite Chapelle, Arques-La-Bataille
represents a superb, original example of the famous Paris art of Alonzo
C. Webb. |
