	John Dawson Watson: One of England's most famous illustrators of the 1860's era, John Dawson Watson entered the Manchester School of Art, in 1847, and the Royal Academy Schools, in 1851. He settled in London in 1860, becoming an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water-Colour, in 1864, and a full member five years later. During his career J. D. Watson exhibited almost four hundred paintings and watercolours at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. One of his paintings was awarded a medal at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873.
	Apart from his oils and watercolours, J. D. Watson achieved even greater popularity as an illustrator. He regularly contributed illustrations to such leading periodicals of the 1860's as Once a Week, Good Words and London Society and individually illustrated such novels and collections of poems as Pilgrim's Progress (1861), Eliza Cook's Poems (1861), The Golden Thread (1861), Bennett's Poems (1862), The Golden Harp (1864), Robinson Crusoe (1864), Old Friends and New (1867), Wild Cat Tower (1877) and Princess Althea (1883).
	In style and subject matter the art of J. D. Watson has often been compared to the Pre-Raphaelites, and to that of John Everett Millais, in particular. Both Millais and Watson created very few original etchings. This portrait depicts a man seated by a table reading. It was published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, Londonfor the journal entitled The Portfolio: An Artistic Periodical Edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton. The British Museum, London, includes an impression of The Ballad in its permanent collection. It may be viewed online under their registration number, 1878.0511.73.
