Horned Owl House |
Artist: |
Watarai, Junsuke (Otaru, Hokkaido, 1936) |
Date: |
1977 |
Medium: |
Original Color Etching and Aquatint |
Note: |
"Delicately tinted, they (the etchings of Junsuke Watarai) tend
to be light and happy fantasies, the colors reflecting the mood of the
subjects: goats, cats, fish, people, all crowded into a strangely assembled dream
landscape. The result is remarkably pastoral, like early Chagall." *

Junsuke Watarai: A twentieth century Japanese etcher born in Otaru, Hokkaido in 1936, Junsuke Watarai studied art in Japan and Paris. The artist began studying etching in 1957 under Komai Tetsuro and in 1958, completed partial studies at the Musashino (Musabi) Art College in Kodaira, Western Tokyo. Watari’s art studies continued in Paris at the famous Paris studio, S. W. Hayter's Atelier 17 and at the Paris Friedlander studio with Shibuya Eiichi. |
|
Junsuke Watarai’s first exhibition took place at the Japanese Print Association (JPA) in 1962. The artist went on to exhibit works in such prestigious venues as the Shun-yo ten; the Exhibition of Young Modern Printmakers, Museum of Modern Art, Paris; the Exhibition of Japanese Modern Prints, Mexico; the Centennial of Hokkaido Art, Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art; and the Japan-Italy International Print Exhibition, Rome. Watarai was also a frequent participant at the distinguished annual College Women's Association of Japan exhibitions (CWAJ print shows in Japan). The CWAJ is renowned for its creative contemporary Japanese print (sosaku hanga) exhibits held annually in Tokyo, Japan since its launch in 1956. In 1975, a group of six artists which included Junsuke Watarai, Shibuya Eiichi. Okabe Massao, Tamamura Takuya, Hanada Kazuharu, and Yazaki Katsumi established an organization known as ‘Prints and Six People’ with the intent of limiting their exhibitions to prints. From 1975 to 1979 four more members joined their group, Kunimatsu Asuka, Horiuchi Kikuo, Ishigaki Mitsuo and Ueno Norio, thus establishing them at the center of the Hokkaido Art scene producing important contemporary Japanese print exhibitions each year. |
|
In 1959 Junsuke Watarai helped to establish the Hokkaido print Association. A fine Japanese printmaker, the artist became a member of the Japanese Print Association (JPA), the Japan Artists Federation, the Shun-yo ten as well as other important art associations in Japan. In 1983, Watarai established and presided over Sapporo Copperplate Print Research Institute and in 1987 started the copperplate art book “Oto no Tabibito” series. |
|
Junsuke Watarai’s fine art can be found in the collections of the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the British museum, London, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Diego Museum, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), LACMA (said to be the largest art museum in the western United States), the Hilliard Art Museum, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; and many other important private and public institutions throughout the world. |

Printed in shades of green, grey, black and orange, Horned Owl House
is a superb example of Junsuke Watarai's etched art. Using tonal layers of aquatint,
the artist has created a wonderful fantasy scene of an anthropomorphic
owl/house. The pair of goats in the front yard serve as perching claws. |
