Note: | This original chromolithograph entitled, The Cow was initially created for a publication entitled,The Little People's Favourite Album (Animal Pictures), published in 1884. The publisher, Frederick Warne, was a leading British color printer of art and books directed primarily for children. Victorian era artists who were commissioned by Warne included such luminaries as Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane. Frederick Warne’s skills as a color printer were of the highest rank, as one can easily discern from this fine example. |
The exacting art of color printing from lithographic stones originated in Europe during the middle 1830’s. These color prints revolutionized methods of artistic printing, with images ranging from animal studies to botanical and fashion plates and poster sized advertisements. Chromolithography was particularly beneficial to natural history artists in that the medium was most capable of capturing the myriad of fine shades and tones found within animal and plant life.
Printing techniques reached their height of subtlety at the time this original chromolithograph was created. Unfortunately, the much cheaper advances of photomechanical process sounded the death knell for the chromolilthograph in the early twentieth century. Yet, as one can see by this original example, depicting a cow, this medium was without equal in its detailing and in its deep and rich oil based colorations.
