Note: |
William Ward is regarded as one of England's greatest
mezzotint engravers of the early nineteenth century. As a student, he
was apprenticed to John Raphael Smith and later assumed the position of
his primary assistant. As an independent artist, Ward became renowned
both for his portraits after contemporary painters (such as this example)
and the genre scenes he engraved after the paintings of his brother-in-law,
George Morland. William Ward was appointed 'Mezzotint Engraver to the
Duke of York' in 1803, and later, 'Engraver to King William the Fourth'.
In 1814 he was elected an Associate Engraver of the Royal Academy. As
the 'A.R.A.' title follows his name in the original engraving, Mrs. Braddyll
must date from after 1814. |

Of late, fine impressions of classic English mezzotints
have realized a sharp rise in value. For example it is now not uncommon
for some of Ward's most desired mezzotints to reach the one thousand
Pound mark at British auctions. This impression of Mrs. Braddyll is
marked
"PROOF" in the lower right corner of the plate. This indicates
that it is an early impression printed before the publication of the
regular edition.
Mezzotints -- perhaps the most demanding of all printmaking forms --
yield very few impressions to begin with. Perhaps fifty impressions
at most of Mrs. Braddyll could be printed before significant signs of
wear would appear. With its exceptional tonal values, this proof impression
of Mrs. Braddyll thus represents a superb example of Ward's
engraved art. William Ward's portrait of Mrs Jane Braddyll is based
upon a painting created by Thomas Richmond Gale Braddyll. The Fitzwilliam Museum includes an
impression of "Mrs. Braddyll" in its permanent collection, Accession Number, P.27641945. The British
Museum also includes an impression of "Mrs. Braddyll" in its permanent
collection, Registration Number, 1902.1011.6195 |
