"Spy" Sir Leslie Ward's original lithograph, "A Professor" is a portrait of the famous Professor and Member of Parliament, Mr. James Edwin Thorold Rogers. This portrait was The British artist, Sir Leslie Ward signed his Vanity Fair prints under the pseudonym of 'Spy'. This impression is printed on thick wove paper and with full margins as published by "Vanity Fair" and printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, Lith. in 1884.

Note: Sir Leslie Ward: Born into an arts family, Ward was surrounded in his childhood by such distinguished personalities as Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, Millais and Holman Hunt. Both his parents were accomplished painters.
  Sir Leslie Ward's first portrait for "Vanity Fair" appeared in March, 1873. By 1880, 'Spy', had become the dominant artist and now his name is more closely linked with Vanity Fair than any other. "Spy' insisted upon catching his 'victim' unawares, often using disguises to stalk his prey.
  Working for Vanity Fair until its demise, no other artist was as important to the fame of the periodical as 'Spy'.
  Vanity Fair: The historic first issue of Vanity Fair was published in London on November 7, 1868. Founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, the purpose of this ambitious weekly publication was to expose contemporary vanities and those responsible for them. Each issue contained a full page, original colour lithographic portrayal of a popular sovereign, statesmen or man of the day, caricatured in the smooth and good-natured manner which became renowned as the 'Vanity Fair Style'. Working under the pseudonyms of 'Spy' and 'Ape', two artists in particular became notorious for their portrayals, although many other important artists, including Max Beerbohm, Tissot, 'Quiz', 'WH', and Sickert worked for the publication on a regular basis and contributed some of its greatest art.
  The last issue of Vanity Fair was published in 1914. Through its forty-five year history, it produced the definitive caricatures of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. collectors of these fine, original prints have always been numerous. In recent years, prices for these fascinating caricatures have dramatically increased, particularly for the more desirable examples. This is a portrayal of the famous Professor and Member of Parliament, Mr. James Edwin Thorold Rogers.
