Lynd Ward. |
Lynd Kendall Ward 'Lynd Ward': The son of a Methodist preacher, Lynd Ward moved from Chicago to Massachusetts at an early age. He graduated in 1926 from Columbia University where he chose illustrating and the graphic arts as his major area of interest. Ward then finished his education in Leipzig, Germany, where he studied wood engraving techniques under Hans Alexander Mueller.
Returning to America, Lynd Ward quickly set to work upon his first book, "God's Man: A Novel in Woodcuts", first published in 1929. This book and the several which followed it (such as, "Madman's Drum", "Wild Pilgrimage" and "Vertigo") were comprised solely of Ward's woodcuts which constructed stories through imagery alone. These fantastic visual novels established Ward's reputation as one of the leading psychological artists of any era.
During the following years Lynd Ward illustrated many more novels (some of which he wrote) and produced individual woodcuts, wood engravings, paintings and drawings. He received such prestigious awards as the Library of Congress Award (1948), the National Academy of Design Print Award (1949), the New York Times Best Illustrated Award (1973) and the Regina Award (1975).
Today Lynd Ward is ranked among the finest American wood engravers of the twentieth century, along with Rockwell Kent, Paul Landacre and Fritz Eichenberg. But what sets his art apart is its powerful psychological intensity which, if anything, is most comparable to the great writings of Poe, Melville and Hawthorne. Like these classic American writers, Lynd Ward was most concerned with the inner workings and outward manifestations of the unconscious, and of how the past shapes the present.
