Paul Sandby: One of Britain's greatest late eighteenth century
artists, Paul Sandby's contributions to both the development of
Landscape watercolour painting and original printmaking are paramount.
While working as a draughtsman to the Survey of the Highlands, Edinburgh
(1747-1752), he learnt to etch and engrave. He then began to experiment
with the newly invented medium of the aquatint in order to more acutely
render the wash effects of his watercolour designs. Paul Sandby's
Twelve Views in South Wales (1774-1775) were among the first aquatints
to be published in England. |
|
Paul Sandby’s contributions as both a watercolourist
and as a designer are equally impressive. He almost single-handedly transformed
the topographical view into landscape art of the first rank. In fact,
the great era of English nineteenth century landscape art was significantly
influenced by the methods of Paul Sandby. One scholar writes, “A
particular strength of Sandby’s landscapes is the way in which
he peoples them with figures who are no mere staffage, but have clothes
to wash, baskets to carry, or children to tend.” * |
|
During the late 1770's Paul Sandby designed at least
three sets of Welsh views. Snowdon in Carnarvonshire (Caernarvonshire)
originates from one of these series. The British artist, William Walker (Yorkshire, 1729
- London, 1793) was responsible for etching the actual landscape scene,
while W. Angus engraved the decoratively framed border. The figures in
the foreground add an almost whimsical touch to the majesty of Mount
Snowdon, a famous landmark of North Wales. |
