Note:	"Mr. Wales' etchings are of great variety both in the subject matter of which he is so fond, and in the quality of episodes connected with that matter, and are little records of history; of a history of sailing ships which is falling farther and farther into the past, and of which the record is too often only topographical on the one hand, or ignorantly impressionistic on the other. Here is to be found the work of the accurate observer associated with the touch of the artist, the satisfaction of the demand for correct delineation of some of the most exquisite creations of man with the feeling for the moods of the elements which they conquered." *
	A leading American marine etcher and painter of the early twentieth century, George Canning Wales actually spent the first part of his life as an architect. To this end he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1885 to 1888. He first worked for the architectural company of Peabody & Stearns and then founded his own Boston architectural firm which he managed from 1893 to 1924. George C. Wales first studied etching in 1917 under William M. Paxton. His first published etchings date from that year. In 1921 Goodspeed's Bookshop in Boston launched a major exhibition of Wales's etchings and lithographs. Here, the artist depicts a fleet of vessels sailing into port. "Outbound" is a striking, original example of the marine art created by George C. Wales.
	George Canning Wales was a full member of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the Guild of Boston Artists and the American Federation of Arts. Today examples of his fine nautical etchings are included in the collections of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, the New York Public Library, The British Museum, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Stavanger Museum, Norway, and the United States Naval Academy.
	The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America. Outbound was published in January of 1923 in a limited edition of 100 artist signed impressions.

Titled, dated and signed by the artist in the plate to the lower right and signed in pencil along the lower margin. Containing very faint traces of light staining within the lower left margin, else a finely printed impression and in very good condition throughout.
