Note: Charles Edward Wagstaff 'Charles Wagstaff': Despite a relatively brief life, Charles Edward Wagstaff clearly rose to the top of his artistic profession. After completing his duties as an apprentice engraver in London, he went on to engrave the portraits of such contemporaries as Prince Albert and the Duke of Wellington. Also, such famous engravings as The Coronation of Queen Victoria , The Marriage of Queen Victoria and The Golfers: A Grand Match Over St. Andrews' Links' were from his highly skilled hand.
A Parochial Authority was published in London in 1836 and thus represents one of Charles Wagstaff's earlier engravings. It certainly, however, shows him in full command of his artistic gifts, particularly in the manner in which he combines mezzotint with the engraved line to create a full range of tones and facial expressions. This is a brilliant example of early nineteenth century engraving technique.
