Edouard Vuillard: A French painter, illustrator and graphic artist, Edouard Vuillard holds a prime position in late nineteenth to mid 20th century French art.
He was most famous for his depictions of intimate interior scenes. Vuillard studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and at the
Academie Julian where he painted with his fellow classmates, Pierre Bonnard and Ker-Xavier Roussel.
Together the three artists formed the cornerstone of the Nabis Group (1893 to 1899). Like most of the
Nabis, Vuillard was influenced by the art of Gaugin and Redon. Edouard Vuillard was a meticulous craftsman, his
artistic oevre is not large. In the graphic arts he created only sixty-seven prints: sixty lithographs and seven
etchings. Most, however, are masterpieces. Street scenes and most particularly, interior views dominate. |

The art of Edouard Vuillard can today be found in
major public collections around the world, such as the Louvre, Paris,
the Hermitage Museum, Russia, The National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh,
the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the National Gallery, London, UK,
the Neue Pinakothek, Munich, Germany, the Cleveland Museum of Art,
The Indianapolis Museum of art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
the Guggenheim Museum, New York , the Museum of Modern Art, (MoMa), New York
and many other public and private institutions. The Jewish Museum, New York
held its first one-person exhibition in 2012 for the art of Edouard Vuillard: A Painter
and His Muses, 1890-1940. The exhibition explored Vuillard's life and artistic
career. It included fifty of Vuillard paintings and a selection
of his prints photographs and documents. |

Interieur
Au Canape was commissioned in 1930 for the book, Le Tombeau d' Edouard
Vuillard. It exists in three states, the first two being mostly trial
proofs. The third and published state (of which this is an example) is
signed 'EV' in the lower left of the plate. The edition has never been
specified, but it is known that this original etching exists in less than
six hundred impressions. Interieur au Canape thus represents both
a scarce and valuable example of this most famous "Artist of Interiors". |
